Hello Class,
For this week's topic, I would like to focus on Thermal Expansion. It was
very interesting because I began to think about how it relates to aviation
so I'm going to save that explanation for the next paragraph. Reading
through the text the explanation is very long so I'm going to try to explain
it in a very simple way. It is basically a concept of when an object heats up
due to a rise in temperature it will cause the structure to change
physically. Depending on the circumstance when that object heats up
enough it will no longer expand, instead, the increased pressure will cause
the object to practically burst open. Today's focus will be on solids
because it relates most to aircraft, the book states that "we can use logic
and basic mathematics to predict the amount of expansion that occurs"
(Ostdiek & Bord, 2018). Thermal expansion for a solid is represented in
this formula =,
In the aviation world, why does thermal expansion matter? Well, it's
important because aircraft need to be able to withstand a wide variety of
temperatures. Engineers and scientists must be aware because if they
chose the wrong type of material for an aircraft that is going to be
exposed to a wide range of temperatures, it may cause premature failure
of the aircraft structure. For example, if a bolt expands too much and the
threads don't expand with it you may end up with a looser bolt when it
cools down because the hole expanded to much causing a permanent
change in the structure.
It was difficult to find real examples in aviation because the concept of
aircraft fatigue is influenced by other factors like g forces, and different
pressures, I wanted a real example that was directly influenced by
expansion. So railroad tracks will have to do below is a real railroad that
ended up being altered due to the changes in its structure. What happens
is that it will basically force trains to stop all operations and must wait till
they are repaired.
