All steps of the writing process, from drafting a thesis, to gathering quotes, to final editing and revising should be documented in your revision history. If you turn in an essay without a clear revision history, you may not receive credit or may be asked to rewrite the essay. Features of an unclear revision history include: large chunks pasted in, mechanically flawless writing composed without any sign of drafting or revision, or other unexplained leaps of progress in a short amount of time. In addition to a double-spaced, left-aligned heading, you should include your ID# and the page number in the upper right corner of each page. The heading of the paper should only appear on the first page of your essay. The essay should include a thoughtful title , center-aligned, in the same size and font as the rest of the text of your response. Criteria for Success The writer’s thesis identifies how the meaning of the work as a whole (theme) and either current events, historical events or personal philosophy or worldview establish a central idea. Both the introduction and conclusion are well developed and relevant to the focus of the essay, providing, developing, and extending context for the writer’s thesis and central focus. Organization follows logically and smoothly from the writer’s thesis - some paragraphs may be longer than others, but each paragraph should have a clear purpose and central idea, along with relevant connections to the text A basic organizational strategy would be to first discuss the play and then move to your outside-the-text connection, but a more sophisticated strategy would be to weave in evidence and connections more fluidly throughout. The writer quotes effectively, and efficiently, selecting relevant evidence with precision. Include at least four to six quotations from Hamlet throughout the essay. Use proper method for citing Shakespeare (Act.Scene.line) like this: (IV.iii.12) or (1.4.17). The writer avoids generalizations, assumptions, and anecdotal thinking about the subject.
