Summary Writing Worksheet
PART 1:
IMRAD Structure
Complete the following tasks for the Rational Snacking article.
Introduction
For several years, scientists have been conducting experiments
on the ability to control themselves in very young children.
Methods
The children received two choice proposals. In Choice 1, the child
could either use well-used crayons or wait for a new set of art
supplies. In Choice 2, the child could either use one small sticker
or wait for a new set of better stickers.
Results
Some scientists showed by their results that the children who
could wait during the 15-minute experiment were those of the
marshmallow experiment however those who refused to wait
longer to receive more beautiful crayons were not necessarily
unable to have self-control but influenced by factors such as lack
of confidence after several broken promises.
Analysis
The patient's refusal of a child should not be considered as an
absolute incapacity of patient power but certain functions must be
considered as the environment of each child, the place of the
evolution of the child or the educational conditions in which the
child.
Discussion
These simple experiments with children and marshmallows have
become a key factor that scientists rely on to claim that certain
children's ability to wait will make them successful beings later in
life.
Summary
Compose a 200 - 300 word summary of the article.
Be sure to introduce the
authors, date, and title
of the study within your
summary. This will help you avoid plagiarism.

Summary Writing Worksheet
Be sure to
accurately
summarize. You may also paraphrase and quote, but be
sure to add page numbers after the words or phrases you take from the article if
you paraphrase or quote.
Consider this an opportunity to practice writing good summaries of scientific
studies, which you will be
required to do in your Annotated Bibliography
submission.
Over the course of many years, researchers have dedicated substantial efforts to
exploring human behavior through the implementation of experiments that involve
observing young children. The primary objective of these endeavors is to identify
discernible patterns and trends that may provide valuable insights into predicting
the future progress of individuals. The results obtained from these experiments
have generated a diverse range of interpretations, thereby contributing to the
overall wealth of knowledge within the field.
A particularly noteworthy study, led by Joseph T. McGuire and Joseph W. Kable
from the Psychology department at the University of Pennsylvania, delved deeply
into the complexities of decision-making. Specifically, their experiment, identified as
8-2012 and titled "Decision Makers Calibrators Calibrate Behavioral Persistence
based on Time Interval Experiment," brought to light the adaptive nature of
decision-makers in relation to their willingness to wait. The research suggested
that, over time and with accumulated experience, decision-makers undergo a
transformative process in which their inclination to delay gratification evolves.
Additionally, the study pinpointed instances of apparent persistence failures,
elucidating how such setbacks can serve as triggers for adaptive temporal
judgments.
Essentially, McGuire and Kable's findings underscore the flexibility of decision-
makers' temporal preferences, highlighting the influential role of experience in
shaping these propensities. The acknowledgment of adaptive adjustments and the
recognition of persistence failures as potential catalysts for refined temporal
judgments contribute to a nuanced understanding of human behavior. It is
theorized that failures in persistence may arise from individuals becoming
accustomed to recurring situations, thereby influencing their responses to temporal
intervals. This nuanced perspective enriches the ongoing discourse on the intricate
interplay between experience, decision-making, and behavioral adaptation.
PART 2:
Comprehension Check
After initially reading and summarizing a source it is important to check your
understanding. One good way to do this is to find good sources that have summarized
the research already.

Read/Reflect
Read/watch the following sources (linked in the assignment page) and notice how they
increase your understanding of the scholarly research article called “Rational Snacking.”

Respond
Compose
responses to the following questions.
A.
What did you learn from these sources? How have they helped you understand
the original article better?
These sources helped me better understand the position of each scientist. even if
he had practised everything based on their interpretation of the results of the
experiments.
B.
How might looking at a blend of both scholarly and popular sources help you with
your own research?
Personally, it helps a lot because it allows me to identify and better understand
what each author says and wants to convey as a message through this research.
