Assemble Your Synchronous Interaction Field Notes
Field note # 1 (July 28
th
2023) (1)The session's focus was on introducing the AAMFT supervision course and supervision contracts (how to create one) and how they can provide structure and set the parameters for professional relationships via ethically as well as regulatory issues. (2) An example of a systemic
interaction within our group; fellow classmates and I spoke about different state laws in their state, & we were given a task from the analysis of a Kentucky plan for supervision and how each
of us challenged and debated one another’s opinions on what we could/should add within a supervision contract. It was very interesting and systemically functioned fluently, as we all were learning & collaborating together. (3) I learned that supervision contracts can be a very important
and valuable to provide clarity for a supervisor and supervisee, as it helps minimize conflict, gives security, & state laws should always be evaluated for our own state’s requirements. (4) I learned about myself that I may want to become a AAMFT supervisor. (5) I also learned that I can negotiate costs and design my own type of contract as long as it is within the contract signed by both supervisor and supervisee. The fact that every state may have its specific regulatory norms and ethical requirements requires more care from the supervisor to abide by those state requirements.
Field note # 2 (August 4

(1) The session’s focus was on technology and supervision and to look through the lenses of the recommendations included in the six the sub standards (6.1 to 6.6) in Standard VI in the AAMFT Code of Ethics. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; 2

me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on how to develop tele-therapy (video) guidelines and practices for seeing clients and provide supervision and what type of guidelines we would each provide on safety and informed consent within the supervisory contract. We then met with the other 3 students and a fourth systemic narrative took place as we all contributed towards a systemic conversation. (3) I learned that building protocols for safety is a resource to implement as well as video therapy will continue to grow as technology does and we should stay vigilant on the ethical point of view for this type of supervision. (5) I also learned that I could work overseas with clients via video therapy according to each country’s laws and supervision via video is going to keep growing rapidly after the hit of COVID-19 in early 2020. Staying updated on the technology advancements in supervision and specifically the field
is very important. Field note # 3 (August 11
th
, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on pragmatics of supervision to help identify and conceptualize the key elements of supervision in MFT. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing what makes systemic supervision “systemic” and how do you distinguish between systemic or linear supervision. We all engaged on how systemic can mean other entities such as school base, police, license board or other agencies being cooperative within supervision roles. Linear is more straight forward and isn’t as “interconnected” as systemic. Self of the therapist, cultural aspects, ethical codes, key roles, relationships, and responsibilities and faith were also discussed to form different systemic perspectives within each of our knowledge bases

as well as engaging upon various opinions towards creating a concept map correctly and how to determine the evidence that lets you know when supervision is effective. (3) I learned the basic elements of systemic supervision and the pragmatics that come along are helpful to understand how a supervisor and supervisee can interconnect to flow professionally and ethically. As a supervisor, we are an advocate and encouragement for a supervisee as well as to make sure they comprehend the rules, regulations, laws, and ethics for our profession. (4) I learned about myself that self of the therapist is very important to consider when systemic learning is involved with others. (5) I also learned that engaging in some of the key elements in MFT supervision is helpful to become an acceptable supervisor and the alliance of supervisor/supervisee is very important.
Field note # 4 (August 18

, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on power, hierarchy, and relationships. Postmodern and modern approaches were looked into in depth. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing opinions on power differential within systemic supervision and deconstructing power in a collaborative and supportive way. Personal opinions and examples were shared and our perspectives all became a systemic rationality as we spoke. It was a good experience. (3) I learned that issues of hierarchy and power “tools”, if not used correctly, can hinder a supervisee from learning the agreed upon goals that preside the supervisory working relationship. (4) I learned that having a calmer demeanor and not being so “directive or “negative” will help not only a supervisor be better, but it also helps the supervisee feel more of a sense of trust and 4

support on their growth journey to becoming an MFT. (5) I recalled I still want to become an AAMFT supervisor and maybe consider teaching at a University as well.
Field note # 5 (August 25
th
, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on diversity, culture, and context within systemic supervision
to provide enhancement of its process, ethical standards, and outcomes. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing all of our opinions about power differential in systemic supervision within the lenses of diversity, social justice, culture, and contextual socio-political pressures at hand. All of our different perspectives helped us see different aspects of all of these lenses and our professor shared several examples as well. It was a good learning experience. (3) I learned within class that diversity, social justice, and cultural tools can benefit the systemic supervisory working relationship on the agreed goals if properly looked at in a lens of
collaborative learning. (4) I learned that I am still learning and growing to be a competent MFT and hopefully one day an AAMFT approved supervisor. (5) I learned
that I still may want to teach at a University and confirmed again this knowledge.
Field note # 6 (September 1
st
, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was primarily focused on as we develop our approach to supervision, consider the ways it is similar to and divergent from the way we provide therapy and power abuse in the supervisory relationship. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing our opinions on power abuse and some supervisors taking advantage of their power, especially in 5

very rural areas like my area (There isn’t an MFT within 300 miles from my town). We all gave our personal experiences with the other group of students as well. All of our different systemic circumstances were discussed and helped us collaborate effectively. (3) I learned about different aspects we should consider when preparing to begin a supervisory relationship, different roles, payments for supervision, and oversight of supervisee competence/professionalism according to the AAMFT code of ethics. (4) I learned that I would like to become more competent on ethical rules and concerns for giving healthy and professional supervision if I become an AAMFT supervisor. (5) I learned that in order to have an effective supervisory relationship then all parties
involved must understand the supervisory contract and are very clear on roles to adhere to.
Field note #7 (September 8
th
, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on case conceptualization from a student of Dr. Dale Bertram
and systemic modernist and postmodernist marriage and family clinical approaches. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing the student’s client issues like a vignette being proposed to us, and we spoke of different opinions and ways to help the student (mock supervision) find other ways to help the client. We were all vigilant and compassionate while doing so. We also discussed how all states regulate our MFT profession in various ways and how different elements impact influential content due to many of us not from the same state and shared our experiences. Note-
the cybernetic system was strongly functioning in class while also being refined (2nd order change) and refining its elements. (3) I learned that being a supervisor can be challenging and the approaches are very difficult but none the less important. I also learned that being a supervisor in this day and age has its advantages and 6

disadvantages, but it is very important to have competent and sufficient practitioners/therapists so systemic supervision is very important to understand and practice. (4) I learned (reviewed) about the primary theoretical systemic orientations: the Batesian cybernetic systemic approach and the trans-generational systemic theoretical approaches on the Boweninan line. (5) I also learned that good supervision
should be informed in its process of cybernetic tools and trans-generational ones.
Field note #8 (September 15
th
, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on different types of supervision and the modalities are live, video, and case consultation. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing our personal opinions on which type of supervision we preferred and why. We looked at all of our different perspectives on live, video, and case consultation and our personal experiences with them. We all had a systemic conversation and discussed challenges and advantages. (3) I learned that live supervision is my preferred way due to it being in real time and in the moment with communication and joining skills enhanced. (5) I also learned that case consultation is preferred in most opinions and I would like to enhance my knowledge with that and video.
Field note #9 (September 22nd, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on case conceptualization from a student/fellow therapist of Dr. Dale Bertram and continuous of types of supervision. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive 7

interaction on discussing a case over couples therapy, referrals, ethical concerns such as 2.2 disclosing, me and the other students suggested the “no secrets policy”, grace periods,
importance of trauma informed care, ethical basses, transition processes of cheating or domestic violence, confidentiality issues since the “couple was doing video/tele-therapy and they didn’t want to do any other type of way because they were comfortable at their home”, We also discussed safe and secure ways of video supervision and the advantages and disadvantages of video supervision and shared some opinions on that. It was a good informative experience. (3) I learned that video supervision can be helpful due to being able to “re-watch” and analyze better if you watch multiple times and tele-therapy isn’t always the best route to take with couples, in my personal opinion on certain aspects. (4) I also learned that I would still like to become an AAMFT supervisor after I obtain my license. (5) I learned that everyone has different opinions on the types of supervision they
prefer but all 3 of them are valuable. Field note #10 (September 29
th
, 2023)
(1) The session’s focus was on our (students) philosophy is on supervision and AAMFT membership qualifications to become an AAMFT approved supervisor. (2) An example of a systemic interaction within our group; me and 2 other students had a dialogically constructive interaction on discussing supervision related things that we will take from our conversations into the future works as MFT’s and if any of us would like to become AAMFT supervisors. We all gave different perspectives on the philosophies of supervision such as if we prefer live, video, or case consultation and why, while also exploring with one another our requirements in our state and how hours and requirements
can differ due to living in different areas around the United States. We spoke of the 8
RUNNING HEAD: Assemble Your Synchronous Interaction Field Notes
requirements of becoming AAMFT supervisors and what it meant for each of us. It was a
nice discussion. (3) I learned how to become an AAMFT supervisor via AAMFT website
and professor explaining we have 5 years from this course to engage to become one. (4) I learned that I personally would like to become an AAMFT supervisor after I become licensed, but I will need 36 hours of supervision to move forward with that if I am not licensed to meet AAMFT requirements. (5) I also learned that the philosophy of supervision is broad, unique, and evolving rapidly over the years of just since I have been
studying as an MFT, but I must be aware of all aspects to become a professional and comprehend all needed to be an AAMFT supervisor.
Reflection on my overall experience with the interactive portion and the key takeaways from that experience
I believe that this experience was unique and very informative in terms of learning all of the information the course would like a competent AAMFT supervisor to know. I believe that it helped me understand what it is like as a supervisee to see how a supervisor should and can help you become a better MFT. It can help us thrive as a profession with different aspects from all different cultures, ethnicities, and beyond to further us as a more respected and more recognized field of psychology. Overall, Dr. Dale was a fantastic professor that enriched us with so much compassionate teaching techniques and was one of the best professors I have interacted with while being at this university for several years! I would encourage all MFT’s to take this course to help them
be enriched in the flooding of systemic supervision learning in such a unique and proficient way! 9
