Human and Physical Regions Geographers categorize regions as the following: formal (uniform) - regions that have a shared trait or common characteristic functional (nodal) - regions focused on a central point that influences an area perceptual (vernacular) - regions defined by beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes people have about an area Because humans define regions in an attempt to categorize and organize geographic space, regions naturally reflect the beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes of humans, either within or outside the region.
