In exploring the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the COVID-19 pandemic, the lens through which we analyze this technology is the Sociocultural Lens. This perspective allows us to delve into the impact of AI on various institutions and the ways in which social practices have been shaped by its implementation. Integration of Reliable Evidence: Jihyeon Kim's exploration of the construction of history textbooks resonates with my experience, highlighting the challenge of representing diverse perspectives. This insight applies to AI's role in addressing the pandemic, as the narratives surrounding its implementation are shaped by those who design and deploy these technologies. Galetsi, Katsaliaki, and Kumar (2022) and Veselova (2022) provide valuable perspectives on the medical and societal impact of AI in combating pandemics, emphasizing the need for varied sources to inform a comprehensive analysis. AI's Impact on Various Institutions: Applying the Sociocultural Lens, AI's role in combating the pandemic has significant implications for various institutions. In the political sphere, AI has influenced decision-making processes, aiding in data analysis for effective policy formulation. In the community, AI-powered contact tracing apps have impacted healthcare strategies, contributing to the overall public health response. Economically, AI-driven models have influenced market trends and investment strategies. In education, the technology has facilitated remote learning, reshaping traditional educational practices.
Influence on Social Practices: The implementation of AI during the pandemic has redefined social practices. Communication has become more data-driven and remote, with virtual consultations and telehealth services becoming commonplace. Cultural expression has adapted through AI-generated content, and governance has been influenced by data-driven decision-making. Caregiving practices have evolved with the introduction of AI-assisted diagnostics and treatment planning. Limitation of the Technology: A limitation of AI in the context of the pandemic lies in its accessibility. The technology's deployment has been uneven, with disparities in access to AI-driven healthcare solutions. This limitation could benefit from change through efforts to democratize AI applications, ensuring equitable access to its benefits across diverse communities. Discussion and Representation: The discussion surrounding AI's role in the pandemic has often been polarized. While some view AI as a crucial tool in navigating healthcare challenges, others express concerns about data privacy, algorithmic biases, and the potential for job displacement. Representations should evolve to better communicate the ethical considerations, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in AI development and deployment.
