The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of technology in addressing the challenges posed by such a global crisis. One technology that has played a significant role is Artificial Intelligence (AI). This essay aims to explore the introduction of AI and its role in the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on its potential in addressing the digital divide and its impact on implicit and explicit biases. By referencing scholarly articles and research, we can gain a deeper understanding of how AI has been utilized to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. 1. Bridging the Digital Divide: The digital divide refers to the gap between those who have access to technology and the internet and those who do not. This divide poses challenges in various aspects, including education, employment, and healthcare (Pew Research, n.d.). In the United States, the digital divide persists between rural, urban, and suburban areas. One of the challenges in bridging this divide is the lack of infrastructure in rural areas, where broadband connectivity may be limited or unavailable. Additionally, the cost of internet access and devices can be prohibitive for low-income individuals or families. Not addressing the digital divide in the short term can result in limited access to vital information, healthcare services, and educational resources. In the long term, this can perpetuate inequalities, hinder economic growth, and impede overall development (Pew Research, n.d.). AI can play a role in addressing this divide by providing innovative solutions. For example, AI- powered devices and platforms can facilitate internet access and digital literacy training in underserved communities, thus bridging the gap and ensuring equal opportunities for all. 2. Implicit and Explicit Bias:
Implicit bias refers to the subconscious attitudes and stereotypes that affect our judgments and actions, while explicit bias refers to conscious and deliberate biases. Implicit biases can become explicit biases when individuals act upon their prejudiced beliefs. For example, a person with an implicit bias against a certain ethnicity may become explicit by expressing discriminatory behavior or making biased decisions based on their prejudice. Encountering explicit bias in personal or professional life is unfortunately not uncommon. It can manifest in various forms, such as discriminatory hiring practices, biased treatment in the workplace, or unequal access to opportunities based on race, gender, or other characteristics. Recognizing and addressing explicit biases is essential to promoting fairness, inclusivity, and equality in society. AI has the potential to address biases by promoting unbiased decision-making. For instance, AI algorithms can be designed to remove human biases from decision-making processes, such as in hiring or loan approval systems. However, it is crucial to ensure that the AI systems themselves are not biased and that they are continually monitored and adjusted to prevent discriminatory outcomes. Conclusion: The introduction of AI has played a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has the potential to bridge the digital divide by providing equal access to technology and the internet, thus promoting inclusivity and reducing inequalities.
