Report
Lyrissa Boyd A.  Reflect on your experience in the Leadership and Communication course by doing the following: 1. Provide a brief overview of your understanding of your Energy Graph from the Learning Report, including  two  personal strengths and  two  personal challenges that relate to your working style.   In my energy graph, I scored effortless in explore, and deliberate in excite, examine and execute. This describes me pretty well. I believe that I am effortless in explore because I enjoy copious amounts of possibilities and creativity. I am very much so focused on the bigger picture and how the little details relate to that. I can be deliberate in my enthusiasm and excitement, and I do enjoy lifting people up, however I can get tired of it after a little while, which is where my score in excite comes in. I am deliberate in examine as well because I do put effort into making a path and following a structure. This is a key part of my personality; however, I focus more on the bigger picture and less on the little details and weeding through those little details. I focus on what will go right and try to avoid what will go wrong. Finally, I got deliberate in execute as well because I have to be deliberate in forcing action. It takes a lot for me to put my foot down, but once I do, actions will follow. The graph said that I needed to be more comfortable in delegating and I believe that to be true. Because of this, two of my personal strengths are project completion from start to finish and being creative with anything that I do. This lends well to my desire to be an educator. Two of my weaknesses are connecting with people on a long-term basis and on occasion I tend to not be as organized as I would like to be. These are things that I need to continue to work on. 2.  Describe your experience(s) of conversations as they relate to the laws of conversation and the four levels of the conversation meter. The laws of conversation are that all people have purposes and concerns, when people perceive that you threatened or are unaware of their purposes and concerns, they resist and this is a waste, and lastly, when people perceive that you are aware of and sensitive to their purposes and concerns, they communicate and collaborate, and this is value. These laws contribute to almost all conversations that I have from day to day. I enjoy giving people a safe space to talk, and this is why the value law is key to me. It is also fitting that if there is a person that will not value or even listen to what I have to say, I will limit my conversation with them so that I do not waste my breathe. The four levels of conversation relate to me because I do all of them in a day, and it depends on each situation I encounter. Some people that I know I do not want to waste energy on, I tend to have more pretense conversation with. This is because I want to put my valued conversation where it matters. Sometimes during the day, I want to push for more conversation, but I do not want someone else’s opinion and that is where my sincerity conversation comes into play. One occasion, there is a time when I need another opinion because I’m not sure in mine. This is when I need facts and someone to discuss with, that is how my accuracy conversation works it way into my day to day most often. Finally, my authenticity conversation plays into my day when I set aside my pride and realize that I am a new grad nurse and I often need guidance and to accept another person’s point of view and the facts that they state. Without all the different types of conversation, I would not have a day that I need because each pay a pivotal roll in energy conservation and quality communication. 3.  Discuss your strategies for being a successful student, including how you will incorporate your strengths and address your challenges. Some of my strategies for being a successful student include increasing my study time, setting aside time to partake in family activities and then schoolwork, and having weekly goals that must be met in order to keep on track.
I will incorporate my strengths into those strategies by having creative goals that fit my schedule and still allow me to be a mom and wife. My other strength is project completion, and therefore I intend to finish the biggest project, which is my master’s degree. My challenges will play a roll, and the biggest one is not being able to always maintain long term contact with people, so I will work weekly with my mentor to reach my goals. I will also beat my challenge in organization because I will keep my goals in a planner and stick to the plan to stay on the right path to graduation. 4.  Reflect on your overall experience in the course and how it applies to  two  of the following: academic activities, professional career, or personal life.   This class played a pivotal role in my professional career because it has influenced my quality of conversation. I attempt to have positive and constructive conversation, reduce my bioreactions and use my mindfulness to ensure that each time I talk to someone, we both get what we want or need out of the conversation. This has not always been the case, and therefore the content from this class has made it easier and more efficient to communicate in a positive manner. It has made it so I know what people are trying to say and why, or how to find out those two important details. The content of this course will be so beneficial to my professional career. It also affects my personal life because it has greatly influenced my communication and bioreactions with my family. I am able to set aside my emotion more efficiently and have a quality conversation that isn’t influenced by emotion or prior events. I now have tools in my tool belt that allow me to calm down, think about what I am needing and communicate that to my family. I am a better wife, mother and daughter because of what I have learned in this course.
