Assignment #3: Part 2 Shachie Saini ELCC 343: Working in Collaborative Environments Genevive Onuigwe Assignment Due Date: December 9 th , 2023
Part 2: Celebrating Others by Brightening their Day What did you do for each category? To contribute to brightening people's days, I dedicated my time to volunteering at the distress centre. The task involved answering calls from individuals who were feeling overwhelmed, providing them with emotional support, guidance, and sometimes just being there to listen. The aim was to offer a beacon of hope and understanding in their moments of need. How did people respond? The response was often one of heartfelt appreciation. Many callers were in need of a kind voice and a listening ear, and they frequently expressed how much it meant to them to have someone there during a critical moment. The impact was visible, as callers would often start the conversation in distress and, through our interaction, reach a calmer state by the end of the call. How did you feel doing it? Each call was an opportunity to connect with another human being and make a tangible difference in their lives, which was incredibly rewarding. The experience was often emotional but always enriching, instilling a sense of gratitude for being able to assist others. It also offered a unique perspective on the value of compassion and empathy in our daily lives. Would you do it again? Why or why not? Yes, I would continue to volunteer at the distress centre. The personal growth and the joy that comes from helping others is unmatched. Moreover, the societal benefit of providing a service that can potentially save lives or provide solace cannot be understated. It's an essential service that builds the kind of world I want to be part of.
What changes would you make? In the future, I would aim to further the reach of the distress centre. This could involve advocating for more volunteers, increasing awareness of the service, and enhancing training programs to equip volunteers with more tools to help callers. Additionally, integrating a feedback system for volunteers could provide insights into how to improve the service further. How will you create a positive environment both in your workplace and in your personal life in the future? I plan to take the lessons learned from the distress centre and apply them more broadly. This means practicing active listening, showing empathy, and being present in all interactions. In the workplace, this could translate into more support for colleagues and a collaborative spirit. In my personal life, it means being there for friends and family and fostering connections that build up a supportive community. By embodying these values, I hope to create a ripple effect that encourages others to act similarly, contributing to a more positive environment all around.
