EDU 363 Evaluating Your Videotaped Lesson Name: Brenda Sanchez Date: December 6, 2023 Videotaping your teaching performance allows you to hear and see yourself as your students do. It also allows you to examine your students' reactions and responses to your teaching. By analyzing a videotape of the dynamics in your classroom, you can check your perception of how well you teach and identify those techniques that work and those which need improvement. Watch your videotape in its entirety once to get an overall impression of your teaching, then go back and critique it using the criteria below. Rate yourself on each benchmark and provide a reflective comment for each criterion. Be concise and specific with your comments! 1. Missing/Not demonstrated 2. Below the level expected of a Block II Intern 3. Acceptable level for Block II intern, but could use improvement 4. Proficient/At level expected of a Block II intern 5. Exceeds expectations for a Block II intern Characteristic Intern Comments (Be specific!) Rating 1 - 5 Vocal Quality Discuss the vocal quality of your lesson; how you sounded. (tone, volume, inflection, confidence, verbal ticks, i.e., um, uh, etc.) I gave myself a 3 as my rate because I feel that I did good in tone and volume. I had a neutral tone and spoke loud enough for my students in the back to hear. However, my confidence was not that great I was nervous about what I was teaching and what I was explaining. Another problem that I have are verbal ticks. I have to stop with just answering students with yes, um, so, or and. It is a nervous tick that I hear myself say but cannot stop. 3 Facial Expressions Discuss your facial expressions throughout the lesson (do you look interested/engaged with students? Good eye contact? Smiling? Encouraging?) I really could not see my facial expressions because I had my back towards the camera, but I did maintain contact with students. I did get engaged with the students and was smiling so much that my mouth was hurting. I feel that his part of the evaluation come naturally to me. 3 Body Language Discuss the body language and physical movement you displayed throughout the lesson (Welcoming or closed posture/gestures? Circulating or stuck in one spot? Any extraneous or nervous gesturing? Confident/professional body language?) My body language is welcoming and sending safe vibes to my students. That it is ok to get something wrong or partly right. I gave myself a low rating because of the limited movement that I had in the lesson. I could not move around because I was using the doc camera while completing the lesson. Although I was using my Ipad I could not connect it to the smartboard and circulate. 2 Professional Appearance Discuss your attire My attire was professional with slacks, a presentable blouse with loafers. Although I feel that my attire was adequate, I did not do much with my hair style. The reason I rated myself a 4 is that my hair for the duration of the day gets crazier and crazier. I struggle with frizzy baby hairs and no matter what I do my baby hairs stand up. This to me is not very professional. 4 Lesson Content and Execution Discuss the content of your lesson – opening, body and conclusion The content of my lesson was straight forward. I was reviewing with students’ morphology and how to break a word apart to decipher what the unknown word could mean. 2 Revised 2021 1 Saint Leo University
EDU 363 The opening was not good, because since it was a review, I would have loved to use something different to make it more interactive. The body is when I start going over the notes taken by the student the day before. I tried not to make it to boring my showing the students pictures so that they can visually see the word. I also say some of the words in Spanish per the request of the students. I love how they appreciate different languages and accept openly other cultures. The closing was not so good either. I feel again it was so dry that the student only paid attention due to me recording them. This is why I gave myself a 2. I lack in adding higher order thinking, adding movement, and making the lesson engaging. Classroom Management Rate yourself from 1 – 5 for overall success of this lesson. Rating 1 - 5 Discuss how you handled classroom management during the lesson (Withitness apparent? Prompt redirect of off-task behaviors? Appropriate feedback and praise? Maintain professional composure?) The way I handle classroom management is by allowing students to participate in the lesson. If they are busy being engaged there are less disruptions, but as a student starting to learn about classroom management, I struggle in keeping above grade level students engaged. When recording this video I would praise the students but because this class rotated it was hard for me to remember everyone’s name. My CT also noted that and said it makes the students feel like you see them and that really got to me because I love my students that have any type of interactions with. Which is why I deducted points from my rating. As for professionalism I try to stay professional at all times but I can adapt to the situation when needed. Feedback I live for feedback I enjoy when someone tells me how to improve in my work because as future teacher I want to give y students the best education I can give them. 3 Revised 2021 2 Saint Leo University
