Week 1 Discussion post The debate concerning the influence of inherited traits and abilities (nature) compared to the influence of environment (nurture) on human development has been argued for decades. For this debate, you must develop a persuasive, research-based argument showing the extent to which your assigned influence affects development. You must use at least two Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) in addition to the course text to support your argument. Remember, you are arguing that either nature or nurture is the most important influence on development. For assistance on how to write an argumentative post, visit the Writing Center help page Argumentative Writing (Links to an external site.) . The side you argue is based on your date of birth using the following guidelines: Nature Nature vs. Nurture is an on-going debate, means genetics and nurture means the environment. “According to Jensen, L.A., & Arnett, J.J. (2018), some scholars have claimed that development can be explained by someone’s genes and that the environment matters basically nothing, while others believe the opposite. Nature is who we are and what we are born with. We can’t decide to be born with developmental delays or other medical conditions that could affect a person’s development. Nurture is the environment we are in, while at times we don’t decide where to live (because of age or financial situation for example), we can decide to make a change of environment and who we surround ourselves with. If a person is born with developmental delays, that person has to live with this forever and has to learn to cope with the fact that they aren’t “normal” and may not be where they are supposed to be developmentally. According to Maryville University (n.d), “nature looks at the impact of such physical approaches as neurotransmitters and genome sequencing on children development, while nurture focuses on aspects such as peer pressure and social influences.”. As I mentioned before who we surround ourselves with is decisions we are choosing to make, nurture is controlled and you could choose to improve them by simply making changes to avoid is affecting your development. Lastly, Nature is more important and has more of an impact on our development than nurture because as seen in the video Nature versus Nurture (Chedd, G., 2013), a set of firefighter twins separated at birth met at 30 and realized they are basically the same person even if they lived in different environments. Regardless of the fact that they had different lives growing up separately, they do the same things and ended up have the same careers, as one of them said “we were born with it” therefore nature has a bigger influence on us than nurture. Respond to at least two of your classmates (one for nature and one for nurture). Specifically, address the following: Critique an opposing position from your initial post, supported with examples. Assess a position the same as your initial post by giving examples of how it could be stronger. Follow up on responses that have been posted to your argument, debating further. Hi Shauna, I completely agree with you that I struggled a bit with this discussion. I believe both play a huge role on human development so it is difficult to be persuasive towards one because there is so much evidence that both go hand in hand. Nature, genes I believe play the biggest role though because it is what you are born with. The video that talked about twins being separated at birth and being so much alike (not physically) because they have the same genes gave us some proof that the environment plays less of a factor on development than nature does. Hi Caroline, this debate has been going on for so long and honestly, I believe that both nature and nurture work together. You have provided some great examples as to why nurture plays a huge role in child development but I think nature is crucial for one’s development. Our genes are what makes us and although the environment might influence our decisions and development, our genes are what we are born with and we can’t control or make the decisions. For example, being born with disabilities, we don’t decide to be born with it, people are just born with them and have to figure out how to cope and manage life. Hi Carmillia, great job on your post! Nature plays such a crucial role in development; you provided such a great example when it comes to inheriting mental disabilities. Our genes and any disabilities one inherits isn’t by choice, and now you have to live with this and figure out ways that work for you to live “normally”. Nurture is based on the environment, that is something you can control and make changes to in an easier way. In the end I think both are important and work hand in hand but nature might be a bit more important in development than nurture. Hi Professor Gregory, I have had friends that have been affected because of their environment growing up. They lived in a house where they experienced abuse from a parent or guardian that took care of them. I was young didn’t know how to help personally, luckily; she was able to
leave that situation once her mother finally realized this wasn’t okay. In all honesty, the whole situation changed her way of trusting people, talking to people, mentally she was not okay for a very long time. It is scary how much the environment you are in can affect you either in a positive or negative way. Hi Ashlee, I agree that this was such a difficult debate and an ongoing one for so long! It’s difficult to completely pick one side over the other because I do believe they both play a huge role on human development. That being said there are certain things we can’t control and that is why nature can sometimes seem much more important than nurture but the environment we are in can cause many different outcomes in our development as well.
