Hello Dr. Kasch and classmates, What are some of the examples of the “light” aspects of interpersonal communication? Interpersonal communication is a necessary skill in the workplace. According to Wood (2020), countless studies between the years 2010 and 2016 revealed, interpersonal skills remain highly sought after by employers throughout the selection process. As mentioned, much research concerning interpersonal skills focuses on the light and dark aspects. Wood (2020) defines “interpersonal communication as a selective, systemic process that allows people to reflect and build personal knowledge of one another and create shared meanings." (p. 21). Upon reflecting on my currently workplace experience there is mostly light aspects. For instance, much communication is shared among all the necessary parties, somewhat transactional in nature. Upon reflecting on my currently workplace experience there is mostly light aspects. The transactional model indicates all communicators share the responsibility of effectiveness; therefore, each person is equally part of the communication process (Wood, 2020). At my workplace weekly meetings occur, where everyone has a chance to express themselves and work through any issues, or to talk about any concerns in general. Quite often, this results in quicker resolution, because there is a shared/safe space to communicate. What are some examples of the “dark” side of interpersonal communication? In contrast, there are dark aspects of interpersonal communication. Wrench et al. (n.d) shares, the dark side of interpersonal communication typically means communication that has a negative outcome; verbal aggression, bullying, and deceptions are a few examples. In my workplace one co-worker in particular takes offense if anyone tries to communicate anything regarding constructive criticism. Therefore, making it difficult to resolve anything involving this individual. Such conservations frequently create a hostile work environment, including ignoring co-workers and not including them in necessary task.  What have you done to counteract these problems, and/or to improve interpersonal communication in your workplace? Furthermore, to counteract the problems with the dark side of interpersonal communication, I have made an effort to regularly keep my supervisor in the loop. Doing so, allows my supervisor to monitor such interactions, provide coaching to the other employee, and mediate situations to maximize communication when necessary. So far, this has been an effective approach. References Wood, J. T. (2020). Interpersonal communication: Everyday encounters (9th ed.). Cengage Learning.
