Creating an inclusive classroom and environment is very crucial when it comes to teaching. Every student no matter their background should feel included. Students should feel a sense of belonging and that should be a focus when creating lessons or even during the first few
weeks of school. Creating a safe space is to help students with different learning styles, genders,
race, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Not only is It important to for the first weeks but it should be continued throughout the school year. A way I will deliver instruction choosing a relevant literature that children can relate too. Part of culturally responsive teaching includes providing students with literary works that highlight the human experience. Also inviting a guest speaker who could appeal to the students.
When students can identify with a teacher or guest speaker’s racial or ethnic background, they are more likely to perform higher and be more engaged as they see a potential role model or mentor in that person.
Encouraging students to interact with another and during whole class instruction can help get them involved and feel included. The more students engage with one another, the better classroom inclusion will be, the greater students’ connection will be to their school community, and the more likely students will be to feel invested in their own education. To accommodate students with speech language delays I will provide copy of notes, they
will get assignments both written and oral and I will work at their pace. Student with ADHD will be given extra time on any assessments following the lesson plans. During whole group
instruction I will be sure to have them sit in a distraction free area so they are able to focus on what I am teaching and during group I will make groups based on skill. For any IDD students I can simply and repeat directions as they need. Visual cues, such as charts and pictures may help
as well. To accommodate them even more I will give repeated opportunities to practice skills, provide immediate positive and descriptive feedback.
