Field Expierence Reflection
During my field expierence, I taught a lesson titled “Exploring Global Cultures” to my sons Kindergarten class. There was a total of 14 students in the classroom. The students mastered
the lesson objective. I ensured the lesson was simple and engaging, and they were all very receptive to what I was teaching. They were even great listeners although at first, I thought they would give me a hard time and not listen. They took the information I was giving them and even asked questions to understand better what I had to say. I came into the classroom enthusiastically
and ensured the students knew who I was. I also made the lesson very engaging and interactive, and hands-on. Students learn better when the teacher is excited about their teaching and the assignment is engaging. I asked a lot of questions and made everything repetitive to ensure they understood me, and that could account for the results. I am always repetitive in my teaching and always ask questions throughout the day, so it is something they have in their mind. Giving a lot of praise is a great way to motivate children to learn, and having reward systems is helpful too.
The lesson main points were for students to develop awareness and understanding communities by learning about different cultures. I did this by starting with reading a multicultural book called “We are all Connected.” By Gabi Garcia. This lesson was also designed to teach children about different traditions each culture has. This lesson supports
developing children's awareness of a global community by encouraging the students to see the world through the eyes of others. For example, young children of this generation need to learn as
well as be willing to engage in communication with people from a wide range of different cultures and traditions to gain a better insight and understanding of how the world works around them as they go through life. I used the teachers smart board to incorporate technology.
Conclusion
I did well with the delivery of my lesson and my interaction with the children. I have
always been able to create solid relationships with children and make them feel comfortable. I
had my struggles too, and one student refused to listen and was disruptive. With that disruptive
child, I asked them questions and played a game that could help that student feel engaged. This
was a learning experience different from the field experiences I had before. I was always mindful
of diversity, and being a person of color, it was easier to connect and form relationships with
students like myself. Overall, my experience with these kids was like no other, and working with
me helped me understand how different every child is and how my approach will vary according
to the classrooms.
