Good Evening Class and Professor,
Part 1:
I grew up playing sports starting before grade school, all the way through high school. As a child, I believe my influences were my parents who played sports and wanted me to play as well. Also, all of my friends at school played so it was a good way for us to all be together. I loved playing sports, and I also knew that I had to keep my grades up to be allowed to play. This helped me learn about responsibility.
Part 2:
Three techniques that can be used to reduce stress in youth sports are creating a positive environment, reducing social evaluation, and not focusing on winning. Creating a positive environment allows the kids to have fun and be relatively stress free. By reducing social evaluation, the kids are not focused on their skill level and are more focused on learning how to play. With youth sport competition growing rapidly, the
focus on winning is growing as well. This can be very stressful for children, and they should not have to experience that. If they are focused on just playing the game and having fun, it will be a much healthier experience.
Part 3:
The instinct theory suggests that some people are naturally going to react aggressively in sports. The frustration-
aggression theory states that aggression is always a result of frustration. The social learning theory suggests that this aggression is learned from others. Game reasoning is an example of using aggressiveness appropriately. An example would be making a big hit to block a defender in football, leading to a large gain for the offense. If aggression had been used incorrectly, the blocker might have made an illegal hit to the head of the opponent, potentially leading to injury.
Identify and explain two methods you would use to help young
athletes control their emotions? One method I would use to help young athletes control their emotions would be to have them focus on teamwork and sharing. If they are more focused on having fun, they will most likely not become frustrated and aggressive with each other. Another method
would be encouraging good sportsmanship, especially when they lose. If the children can show integrity and positive encouragement to the other team, they will be less likely to develop anger or bad behavior towards other players. Thanks for reading!
