Hello class,
Reflecting on the reasons that I participated in sports I can remember at first my parents signing me up at first. From that point it was a reason to hang out with my friends until about little league in which competitiveness began to take over. I
was obsessed with being on the All-Star team for baseball and wanted to become the best player I could with the thoughts of playing in the Little League World Series on my mind.
I have coached baseball several years and from my experience having a positive environment allows kids to give their best effort. I have always encouraged children to try their best and sometimes failure happens, but not to be afraid of it.
I know for children winning becomes important, to me learning how to do a process the correct way has a major impact on winning and losing. I have never been a coach whose impact is measured on wins and losses. I have always tried help my teams understand that if we do things right more often it will show up on the scoreboard, sometimes another team just does them a little better and that’s just the nature of the sports. The last part is applying some PST to help them relax or visual success. Without ever really knowing how this works, I always have
my team sit in the dugout prior to the game and we go over the batting order and
positions. Once we have covered everything, I will have the take a deep breath and blow it out. Sometimes you can see on their faces that their school day may have them extra hyper or feeling a certain way and after doing this a time or two you can see on the faces of certain kids, they do feel a little more relaxed. I never
really knew before this course why that impact really was made, but it has helped
many of my teams, so we continue to do it.
From my experience and with the help of social media aggression in sports is becoming too common. A variety of personal factors along with situational factors
will influence a person’s state. This may increase an individual’s anger and hostility. Frustration, learned behaviors and instinctive behaviors lead to some people acting aggressively and others not. It is important to identify some signals that could lead to aggressive behaviors such as losing, unfair officiating, embarrassment can lead to frustrations. The first method of creating a healthy environment for players is for a coach to set the example of good sporting behavior. Setting a good example for players can allow the team to strive for success but play within the rules of the game. It is also important to teach young players why behaviors are inappropriate. Understanding why it is unacceptable to
act in an aggressive or frustrated state can help young internalize and apply the rationale to their behavior.
