Music Paper 1
The King’s Speech
was powerful because of the music played behind the spoken speech. It did a great job of building up this dramatic moment. I think without the music accompanying the speech, this scene would not be as impactful or dramatic. Using Beethoven’s #7 was an excellent choice for this important depiction of history. Ludwig van Beethoven composed this symphony in 1811 and 1812. There is a total of four movements in this symphony. This specific section (the second movement) is in allegretto. It was premiered in Vienna on December 8
th
, 1813. Allegretto often is performed separately due
to its popularity and audiences demand an encore most of the time that it is played. This piece is thought to be a musical confrontation between Beethoven and Napoleon. It was during the time of European wars of liberation from Napoleonic domination. Interestingly enough, at this time in Beethoven’s life, he was experiencing hearing loss. He began needing to use “conversation notebooks”. I found many of the musical elements impactful and helped make the scene effective. The second movement of Beethoven’s #7 used the triple meter 6/8 pattern. I think this suited the scene well and provided an excellent tempo for the scene’s purpose. The allegretto tempo marking fit in perfectly with the tone of this scene. It built up to an important message from the
king. I found it interesting that this movement is slower than the other three movements. I think
that using the second movement was the right choice. I also think that the symphony being in A minor fit the scene perfectly. The violas, cellos, and ostinato begin the symphony with the main
melody then violins join in repeating that. Then the violas and cellos begin a second melody. This pattern continues with all of the instruments following each other beautifully. Beethoven did an amazing job of keeping a consistent rhythmic motive. He uses a steady pace to tie two melodically disparate sections together. In my opinion, this piece was the perfect choice for the scene in The King’s Speech
. It added drama, suspense, and flowed well with the words of the speech. All of the musical elements put together made this symphony suitable for the scene. The scene in Amadeus
is extremely emotional and intense. The music to accompany this scene adds to the intensity and emotion. The Requiem Mass in D minor K626 was a great choice
for music in this scene. It is fitting that this piece was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the movie is also about Mozart. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed The Requiem Mass in D minor K626 in Vienna in 1791. This piece was not finished due to Mozart dying before he was able to complete it. Franz Xaver Süssmayr completed it in 1792. It is thought that Mozart was writing this piece for his own funeral as he knew death was upon him. I found that many of the musical elements made this piece work well for this scene. The Requiem Mass in D minor K626, specifically Lacrymosa, fit really well with this scene and made it very effective. I actually enjoyed that the dynamic gradually increased and got louder over the
course of the scene. The choir added a nice element. I noticed that there were sopranos sung a powerful crescendo. This was my favorite part of the piece. I liked that it worked its way up to forte
. The piano being the beginning instrument was a great choice. It began on a rocking rhythm in 12/8 meter. The texture of this piece is homophonic. Overall, it was melodic with the choir accompanying the music. I believe that this piece was perfectly suited for the scene in
Amadeus
. The musical elements make up a song that fits incredibly well with what is happening in the movie scene. Overall, I enjoyed both of these pieces and the scenes that they go along with. They were chosen very well and make a lot of sense. They both have elements that make them effective, and I think they are truly suitable for the scenes.
