Instructions: Choose an article that relates to our current module. Write one paragraph
per prompt. Each paragraph should be at least three sentences. The full instructions
appear on the next page. I will provide example responses below, but I encourage you
to write in your own voice. Please keep the questions in place so your answers are
clearly separated.
1. What is the main idea of the article? What supporting details does the author
provide?
The article I chose is called: “To Be Happy, Marriage Matters More Than Career” by
David Brooks summary by David Brooks. The main idea of the article focuses on young
adults prioritizing their careers over marriage because they perceive professional success
as more significant than marital happiness. David Brooks uses survey data and
researchers to analyze individuals' professional life, marriage and to see how they both
impact people’s lives. For example, “
The common operating assumption seems to be
that professional life is at the core of life and that marriage would be something
nice to add on top sometime down the road. According to an analysis of recent
survey data by the University of Virginia professor Brad Wilcox, 75 percent of
adults ages 18 to 40 said that making a good living was crucial to fulfillment in
life while only 32 percent thought that marriage was crucial to fulfillment.”
2. How does this article connect to our current module and why is it important?
What new ideas emerge from reading these together? What questions arise for
you?
This connects to critical thinking because the article’s assertion about the importance
of marriage for happiness can be a subject for critical thinking by encouraging readers
to question assumptions, analyze evidence, consider opposing views, and draw
informed conclusions about the role of marriage and career in their own lives. Some
questions that arise for me are: Are changing societal norms and expectations
influencing how people prioritize marriage and career? How do gender roles and
expectations come into play when discussing the importance of marriage and career?
Do these factors affect men and women differently in their pursuit of happiness? Do
marriage and career contribute differently to short-term and long-term happiness?
3. What is your opinion of what you read in the article? Why is this important to
you?
I think this article can lead to a more of an understanding of the complex factors
between marriage, career, and happiness. It can also prompt individuals to reflect on
their own values, priorities, and life goals, sparking discussions and explorations of
these topics from various angles. I think it’s important because happiness is important
when it comes to marriage and career. It touches on fundamental aspects of
individuals’ lives, relationships, and societal structures. These discussions contribute
to personal growth, relationship health, and broader societal adaptation to changing
values and priorities.
4. Please provide a link to the article here:

1.
What aspect of their post is important to you? Why?
I think that the aspect of understanding the
importance of marriage and career for happiness
helps individuals to self-reflect and inform
decision-making. I think it helps individuals in
these situations to contemplate the significance of
marriage and career in their own lives, and engage
in self-assessment. This also helps them clarify
their values, priorities, and life goals. I feel like the
article can give tools and insights to navigate the
complex interplay between marriage and career in a
way that promotes their own happiness and life
satisfaction.
2.
What is your viewpoint? Why?
I think people should do whatever is best for
them. Whether they decide they want to b
married or focus on their career etc, it’s up to any
individuals choose how they want to live their
life and no one should be judged for that.
Everyone is different & has a different
perspective on how they want to live their life.
3.
What is a question you can ask them to better understand their viewpoint?
Do you think younger generations prioritize
marriage and career differently from older
generations? Why or why not?
