1 Final Project Milestone One: Introduction Southern New Hampshire University HSE-220: Communication Skills for Human Services Professor Jodie Boyer 21 January 2024 1
2 As human service professionals, we are committed to helping improve the lives of our clients, who may be facing any number of challenges, such as mental, physical, emotional, or financial. Once we identify the resources, services, or treatments they require, we aim to ensure they have access to follow through with utilizing said resources, services, or treatments. Unfortunately, for many human services clients, transportation is a barrier to accessing the services and treatments recommended or required for their improved quality of life (AHA, 2017). Let's take, for example, a recent client who is an individual with significant mental health needs, physical disabilities, and limited financial resources. The client's therapist has recommended she participate in therapy groups three times per week as part of their treatment plan (Southern New Hampshire University, n.d.). However, like several other clients in the community, they face transportation challenges, such as lack of a personal vehicle, financial constraints, or unreliable resources, which hinder their ability to attend these vital sessions despite their desire to do so (AHA, 2017). In this instance, the client has only been able to attend three groups in the past two months due to inconsistent transportation, which hinders her immediate progress and poses a risk of greater emergency room visits or hospital admissions (Southern New Hampshire University, n.d.). Consistent access to therapy sessions would allow the client to improve their overall quality of life by providing medical and mental health stability. While clients have access to transportation through the non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) state-funded transportation program, it has been brought to our attention that there needs to be more consistency in the transportation program's functionality (i.e., schedules, routes, etc...).  2
