According to the reading, "Presenting the Methodology..." what is the purpose of the methods/methodology section? What purpose does including this section hold for your Discourse Community Research Project?
The methodology section of a research project is meant to provide a detailed description of the procedures and techniques that used to conduct the study and obtain primary data. Presenting methodology allows for the study to gain validity and reliability as it demonstrates that proper methods were used to obtain and analyze data. It also allows the study to be replicable which can help establish further reliability if similar results are obtained by other researchers. In the discourse community research project, the methodology section allows me to clearly outline the way I conducted the research, the participants I chose, the questions I considered, and the analysis. This clarity in methodology allows me to allow other students to understand the potential of the study and allow for more work to be done on the topic in the future. For example, if I study the effectiveness of genres in Learning Communities, I can help improve their ability to assist first year students.
Considering the recommendations at the end of the "Quoting, Paraphrasing..." reading, which 'rule' do you think that you will find most beneficial to your writing, and, which rule do you think
will be most challenging to follow. Explain why.
I think the most important rule for me is to use quotations not as evidence, but as ideas that reinforce my idea. This will include the quotations in my writing in a way that flows well. The hardest rule to follow would be finding quotations before writing the paper. This is difficult for me because I need something to go off of when I find evidence and quotations. I write in chronological order, so to already plan out my quotations before writing is going to require a lot more preparation.
The final article, "Selecting Examples..." notes that research essays, such as ours, are about creating a conversation and should be viewed as a collection of smaller pieces within the overall essay. Considering your discourse research specifically, what 'conversations' do you plan to have in the final revision?
Additionally, what are some of the smaller pieces that will make up your overall text? Label and describe them.
The conversations that I plan on having are about defining the purpose of learning communities, then I will talk about benefits for incoming students and potential drawbacks while talking about why it is important to understand their effectiveness. I will go into the methodology of the study and talk about the conclusions obtained. Finally, I will talk about future prospects of the data obtained. The smaller pieces that will make up my overall texts are the evidence that I will obtain not only through the surveys I conduct but also some quotes from members of my learning community. I will also bring up quotes from the university website about their aim for learning communities.
