: MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING LAB
FALL 2022
LAB OVERVIEW
The purpose of the skills-based lab is to prepare first year social work students for field practicum with accelerated training in motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative, person-
centered communication style. The lab is designed to be a highly interactive experience in which students will develop effective rapport building strategies and practice facilitating a form of guided dialogue to elicit and strengthen motivation for behavior change. By the end of the training, students will have developed a relational and
technical skillset of an evidence-based approach that is well-grounded in testable theory, verifiable, generalizable, and transportable across different populations and contexts.
LAB FORMAT
The lab meets weekly for 7 consecutive weeks for 2 hours per session. Sessions are primarily devoted to interactive role playing exercises during which students will learn how to incorporate the facilitative style of MI as form of guided dialogue. This intensive training method requires active, continuous participation and interaction. The sessions are structured in
such a way that role play and other exercises are conducted first for students to get an initial feel of applying specific skills, followed by debriefing and feedback on the exercise. Lastly, a discussion will take place on the broader concepts and processes that evolve from the applied techniques. Research has shown that, in clinical training settings, “experiential learning” in conjunction with ongoing supervision and feedback support the longevity and sustainability of proficiency and adherence in skills building. LAB AIMS
1.
To enhance students’ contributions to, and experiences in the field with training in motivational interviewing, an evidence-based, person-centered communication style.
2.
To provide an experiential learning environment to practice MI processes and skills.
3.
To support students’ personal and professional growth by building effective engagement skills: to actively listen, reflect, and collaborate with peers, clients, supervisors, professors, and others.
4.
To
foster proactive self-awareness and self-reflection in challenging, productive, and meaningful dialogues in field of social work.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Due date:
Each log will be due 24 hours prior to the start of the following session.
How to submit

The interview recording will serve as an assessment of students’ progress in proficiency and adherence to motivational interviewing. Students will be rated on a
3 point scale based upon MI-consistency in additional to individual feedback from their instructor. Please see Final Assignment under Modules tab for instructions & rubric.
