Module Three Zach Rodgers Activity Template
1. Assess the Design Needs
List ideas for improving the advertisement. Consider the following: A. Which are the appropriate images that can be placed in the preferred layout? How can you use the logo effectively? I personally think the current image is a little to zoomed in and uncentered. It still works and gets the job done, but I would perfer an image where more of the pizza is seen and centered in the layout. I would also choose to pick a higher quality pizza image. The pizza in here looks like a frozen pizza. I wouldn’t worry to much about choosing one of the fancy gourmet images, because the target audience is college. I would stick with a simple, regular pizza image that is high quality and simple.
B. How can the headline, sub-head, and other textual details highlight the information important for the target audience? The headline, sub-head and other textual details can be improved first of all with color. In this image they are all white, which isn’t bad but it isn’t as good as it could be. In the current advertisment the sizing of the words “Pizza” and “The Ultimate Study Buddy!” work well but I would lower them in order to not cover up any of the slice of pizza that the man is holding. Some of the words in the text in the bottom of the screen blend in with the light colored pizza crust. It’s still readable, but it would pop more with a solid color background.
C. What are some of the effective color, font, and layout choices for this advertisement based on target audience?
The colors red, yellow, black and green have been decided on as the effective colors. In this current advertisment, the white text it effective in making the words pop. However, I think the text could work even better with solid color backgrounds. A layout that catches attention from far away and draws the viewer in would be the goal. Placing a large image of a pizza that can be seen from far away would be effective. Next, allowing the reader to view the advertisment from top to bottom. The headline in the biggest and boldest font, followed by the sub-head in a smaller font below and the final text at the bottom. Keeping clean and simple fonts is important as well.
Assess the design needs from the target audience’s expectations. A. Explain how the audience’s preferences will affect the choice of the design components like color, text, layout, and images.
It is important to note that the audience’s preferences come first. As designers of course we want to be creative, but the temptation is to put what we want and our own creativity before the client or audience. The goal is to listen to the clients needs and create a design that cathes the attention and draws in the audience. The audeince for the 3-1 activity is looking for high contrast and fully saturated colors red, yellow, black and green. In terms of text, simple and clean texts and fonts are recommended that are straight and to the point. We want it to be easy to read. And when it come to the images, we want it to be traditional, simple and casual. Nothing to fancy and easy to understand.
2. List Ideas for Improvement
Using your ideas for improvement and the given advertisement as a reference, create a mock-up based on the audience’s expectations using Adobe Illustrator. A. Choose images effectively and place the images and the logo based on the preferred layout. Ensure the image and logo sizes are appropriate. B. Use the headline, sub-head, and other additional details from the sample advertisement and place them effectively. C. Ensure the color, font, and layout appeal to the target audience. D. After the mockup is done, export it as a JPEG file and save it. Go to File > Export > Go to the Format box, and select JPEG. 3. Create a Mock-up
4. Import the Mock-up to This Template

Explain the rationale for your choice of components. Include the following in your response: A. Explain your rationale for the color, font, layout, images, and logo. I choose to use the suggested colors red, yellow, black and green. Red was my most used color, and allowed the white Ariel font to pop. I added a black shadow effect to the font in order to give the words more emphasis. The header “pizza” was at the top followed by the subheader directly underneath. It is impossible to miss and catches the eye. The font at the bottom is small, clean and simple, but the red background allows it to not be missed by the viewer. I choose the pizza to be big and in the middle so that you can’t miss it. It’s a quality looking pizza that clearly shows what the product looks like so the customer knows what they will be getting. The logo is big and in the top left and can’t be missed. There is no question what company is being represented here.
B. Explain how your design choices help address the needs and preferences of the target audience.
I explained this slightly above, but every request and preference asked for has been addressed. The use of the 4 colors. The use of a simple ariel font. A target audience for college aged people and students. A simple layout that is easy and quick to understand. The advertisment is not overly fancy and promotes a budget friendly feel.
