Lesson 6: Self-Assessment Lab Instructions: Complete the tasks and provide a written response to the Reflection Questions . See the rubric to determine how points are earned for this assignment. PART A: ASSESS BREATH SUPPORT To assess your breath support for speech, complete the counting task and reading task Task 1: Counting Take a deep, diaphragmatic breath and count to the highest number you can reach on a single breath, until you run out of air. Reflection Questions for Task 1: What number did you reach? Was your result within the norms provided in the lesson? Less than? More than? (Needs written response) : I counted up to 70, which is 10 points higher than the average male score which is 60 Task 2: Reading Use your phone and record yourself reading The Rainbow Passage, beginning with the title (below). After you have recorded your voice, go back and listen to it, and mark on the passage where you took breaths, until your recording indicates one minute. Reflection Questions for Task 2: How many breaths did you take in one minute of reading aloud? Was your result within the norms provided in the lesson? Less than? More than? Did you hear any instances of voice strain? (Needs written response) : While reading for one minute I took 15 breaths which is within the norm for an adult. The norm is 13-18 breaths per minute. THE RAINBOW PASSAGE When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon. There is, according to legend, a boiling pot of gold at one end. People look, but no one ever finds it. When a man looks for something beyond his reach, his friends say he is looking for the pot of gold at the end of the Lesson 6 Updated 2022 Page 1
rainbow. Throughout the centuries people have explained the rainbow in various ways. Some have accepted it as a miracle without physical explanation. To the Hebrews it was a token that there would be no more universal floods. The Greeks used to imagine that it was a sign from the gods to foretell war or heavy rain. The Norsemen considered the rainbow as a bridge over which the gods passed from earth to their home in the sky. Others have tried to explain the phenomenon physically. Aristotle thought that the rainbow was caused by reflection of the sun's rays by the rain. Since then physicists have found that it is not reflection, but refraction by the raindrops which causes the rainbows. Many complicated ideas about the rainbow have been formed. The difference in the rainbow depends considerably upon the size of the drops, and the width of the colored band increases as the size of the drops increases. The actual primary rainbow observed is said to be the effect of super-imposition of a number of bows. If the red of the second bow falls upon the green of the first, the result is to give a bow with an abnormally wide yellow band, since red and green light when mixed form yellow. This is a very common type of bow, one showing mainly red and yellow, with little or no green or blue. The Rainbow Passage, a public-domain text, can be found on page 127 of the 2nd edition of Grant Fairbanks’ Voice and Articulation Drillbook. New York: Harper & Row. PART B: ASSESS PITCH To assess your pitch, you will need to use the download the recommended app Voice Tools to analyze your voice when you are reading and speaking spontaneously. Task 3: Reading with the app Voice Tools Read the first two to four sentences of The Rainbow Passage into your phone, following the prompts on the app Voice Tools, using the “Analyze” tab. On the “Results” page, look for and report “Pitch” “Average” in Hz. Reflection Questions for Task 3: Record your average pitch while reading. Are you near the average pitch for your gender as indicated in the lesson? Above the norm? Below the norm? (Needs written response) : For this exercise I scored 107Hz, the norm for males is 125Hz. This means my voice is bit deeper than normal. Task 4: Spontaneous Speech Repeat the same steps as in Task 3 above using Voice Tools “Analyze” tab, but instead of reading, speak spontaneously about any topic you wish for about 10 to 30 seconds. Use the app to analyze your average pitch. Lesson 6 Updated 2022 Page 2
Reflection Questions for Task 4: Record your average pitch for spontaneous speech. Are you near the average pitch for your gender as indicated in the lesson? Above the norm? Below the norm? (Needs written response) : For this exercise I scored 113Hz, the norm for males is 125Hz. I had a more neutral tone of voice while speaking spontaneously. PART C: ASSESS LOUDNESS To assess your loudness, use the “analyze” tab in Voice Tools; your loudness when you are speaking spontaneously will be given in the data; look for and report your “Volume Average” in dB. Task 5: Loudness in Spontaneous Speech Record your average loudness for spontaneous speech. Reflection questions for Task 5 : Are you near the average conversational loudness as indicated in the lesson? Above the norm range? Below the norm range? (Needs written response) : For this activity my average loudness for spontaneous speech was 64dB, the norm is 60-70dB. I am right within the normal range. PART D: SUMMARY Task 6: Summary Paragraph Reflection Questions – Interpret your results In paragraph form, summarize the results of your measurements of your breath support, pitch and loudness. Determine if your measurements are within normal limits (fall within the norms) and if not, explain how your measurements are different. State if your results suggest that you may have a voice problem; this is your preliminary diagnosis. Either agree or disagree with this diagnosis and state why. Lastly, indicate if this activity was beneficial and if so, state why. (Needs written response) : While analyzing my breath support, I found out that I scored right around the normal ranges. For the first task I scored 10 points higher than the norm of 60, and for the second breath task I fell at 15 breaths per minute which falls within the normal range of 13-18 breaths per minute. For pitch I found out that my voice is a little deeper than normal, I scored a 107Hz and a 113Hz. The average for males is 125Hz. Lastly, while analyzing the loudness of my voice I scored 64dB which falls within the normal scale for males at 60-70dB. After examining all my results, it is most likely that I am not suffering from a vocal problem. I agree with this hypothesis because I feel like I have a healthy voice and have had no vocal issues.
