Sarah Byerly IT-226 Module 1 Professor Duggan 08/17/2023 Communication is pivotal in STEM because it helps disseminate theories, research, experiments, and data. I will be defining three types of communication along with examples of each. These three types are academic, professional, and technical. Communication is the process by which information is exchanged between individuals. (“Communication Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster”). This is done through words, pictures, audio, and video. Academic communication: Academic communication is the presentation of ideas in scholarly form. This form of communication is highly structured in presentations, classroom discussions, and essays or reports. The characteristics of this type of communication are a vocabulary concentrated in a specific scholarly area and a formal tone. This type of skill is essential in academic and workplace communication. An example of this type of communication would be a presentation on how the advancement of technology has affected human health. Professional communication: Professional communication occurs in the workplace. It can be seen in the form of emails, reports, presentations, or memos. This form of communication is also seen in the interview process. Professional communication tends to have a formal tone and a vocabulary specific to that industry. This communication is seen not only in the workplace but also in academic settings because there is Technical communication: Technical communication is technical information communicated to a particular audience for a particular purpose. This can be seen in the form of reports, manuals, or technical papers. This type of communication is often used among experts in their fields and can have extraordinarily complex information that would seem confusing to someone outside of that field. A notable example of technical communication is when an
Sarah Byerly IT-226 Module 1 Professor Duggan 08/17/2023 automotive technician contacts their regional support technicians for help. Communication between these technicians would be confusing to the customer. The technicians are both familiar with the industry language and terminology while the customer is not. All three of these forms of communication play a role, one way or another, in the workplace as well as in academic settings. These forms of communication are crucial in information technology. Due to the information technology field's nature, these professionals need to work hard to develop and improve their communication skills. This is a field that relies heavily on being able to effectively communicate with others to exchange ideas and information to ensure there are few if any areas for miscommunication. In a field like information technology, where exact information is always crucial, communication is the most important skill to have. If there is any type of miscommunication that occurs it could be detrimental to the project or business. Learning how to communicate well is a skill that has a dramatic effect on anyone in any field. The outcomes of any type of negotiation, meeting, or simple conversation are influenced by how well someone can communicate. It is very frustrating to not understand vital information, and no one likes to be misunderstood. Miscommunication can waste time and cause undue stress on a person as well as a business. This is why it is so important to make sure you have effective communication skills no matter what field you are in. Effective communication skills are not just necessary in your career but are vital in everyday life.
