1 Week 1 Assignment One Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen Hailey Jackson The University of Arizona Global Campus GEN499: General Education Capstone Meredith Carey April 4, 2022
Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen What is a global citizenship? To me the mindset is that it means that we all have a responsibility to the world. Changes can be made on smaller scales that lead to even bigger changes globally for the good of the world as a whole. In this paper, I will discuss the differences between globalism and globalization, the benefits of advanced technology, and theorsits disagreements on the meaning of global citizensip. I will also evaluate the importance of becoming a global citizen through the two outcomes of valuing diversity and environmental sustainability with personal experiences. Finally, I will review two course of general education that influenced me to become a global citizen. “Globalism” and “Globalization” After viewing the required video “Globalization at a Crossroads”, “globalism” is defined as it “seeks to describe and explain nothing more than a world which is characterized by networks of connections that span multi-continental distances” (Nye, 2002). “Globalization” is defined as “ruthless exploitation by corporations; to others, it means bringing economic development to all the peoples of the world” (Stucke, 2009). To me, I originally thought the they each meant the same thing in the end, but globalization is another way of referring to the increases and decreases in globalism as Joseph Nye states in this article. Advanced Technology Being a global citizen in the world of advanced technology can be beneficial to my success in meeting my persona, academic, and professional goals as I am more knowledgeable and aware of the resources that are out there. Thanks to technology, I am able to research something instantly, especially if I am looking for, let’s say a product and how the use of it will affect the environment or a mode of transportation that will decrease pricing and improve the 2
amount of shipments in a day. Professionally, I would like to accomplish decreasing unnecessary waste. After taking the sustainability course and other non-general education courses, I felt the need and want to create more sustainable packing options for the company that I work for. I also now tend to take the time to decrease the amount of shipments that we have daily and weekly and coordinate one big shipment for the items at once. Technology is definitely helpful in this aspect as I can do research and find exactly what I am looking for to aid in this process. Disagreements There has been a disagreement between theorists about the definition of global citizenship. One of the theorists refers global citizenship with “international and world citizenship”, while another implies that a global citizen is focused on social justice, a ‘‘world citizen’’ is more worried about trade and mobility, and an ‘‘earth citizen’’ is concentrating about the environment. My own definition of global citizenship as I stated in the beginning means that we all have a responsibility to the world. Changes can be made on smaller scales that lead to even bigger changes globally for the good of the world as a whole – an overall better place to live for everyone. Importance of Global Citizens Valuing Diversity Valuing diversity to me means that one values and appreciates the differences between people. We are all different in this world, especially those from other countries and cultures. It’s important to my own development as a global citizen because different mindsets and ways of living can drastically change how one thinks. It also allows for creating environments where others feel safe and included. Environmental Sustainability 3

What is environmental sustainability? Sphera’s Editorial Team defines it as “Environmental sustainability is the responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global ecosystems to support health and wellbeing, now and in the future.” In my own words, I would define it as the responsibility to protect the earth, protect our home. It’s important to my own development as a global citizen because one person can change the world. It starts off with reusable packaging or other resources for our current use of plastics bottles, then leads to a global change. I could be the one person that changes the mind of others, who then change their minds, and leads to something much bigger than imagined, a healthy and sustainable earth for generations to come. Personal Examples Valuing Diversity Valuing diversity has always been something that I always welcomed. I worked in the military and that includes people from all over the United States, even the world! There are so many different cultures, beliefs, and ideas. For me, it was great to hear all these other things from Soldiers. I don’t think that is made us anything but closer friends who respected one another and our thoughts/practices. I could have just got lucky with the unit I was assigned to because I know it is not like this everywhere in the military. Environmental Sustainability I have become more conscience of my choices that I make when it comes to purchasing and disposing of items. For example, instead of throwing out old clothes and creating more waste, I have donated them to those in need or take them to H&M where the clothes are then recycled. There are quite a few of clothes donation boxes where I live so that is always the closest, quickest option. I also went shopping at the mall and noticed that H&M retail store has a 4
box near the cashiers that you can bring old clothing in to be recycled and receive a discount on your next purchase! That has now been the two options I consider when getting rid of old clothing rather than throwing in the trash. Influentional General Education Courses There are two specific general education courses that influenced me to become a global citizen which include Introduction to Sustainability and Informal Logic. Informal Logic was a great course as it taught me how to make sound arguments. It’s important to consider both sides to an argument and to consider the reasons behind the other viewpoint. Introduction to Sustainability was a course aimed more at climate change and other impacts on the earth. A specific lab that we conducted was on marine biology and eutrophication, where the soil affected the water quality and the quality of life in the water/environment. Conclusion To conclude, globalization and globalism are different terms with similar ideas. Advanced technology has been a huge benefit to me professionally in my thoughts of things to incorporate in the workplace as a supply chain member, and we have discussed the importance and my personal experiences with valuing diversity and environmental sustainability. The world would be a wonderful place when the ideas and beliefs of others were considered important and heard as well as caring for the earth and the world we live in. It’s important for both outcomes because it will lead to healthier generations to come! Thanks to Informal Logic and Introduction to Sustainability, these outcomes of valuing diversity and environmental sustainability are much easier to accomplish for me. 5
