Introduction Remote work is changing the concept of the workspace around the world. Remote work includes telework, which is using technology instead of travel to meet with clients and colleagues. Remote work also includes telecommuting, which is using technology instead of commuting to a central workplace. Remote work is also called distributed work, mobile work, smart working (in the United Kingdom), and work shifting (in Canada). This report surveys the move to distance work globally and within K&L Insurance nationwide. The report outlines the status, compiles statistics, highlights the benefits, and identifies the challenges of remote work. Status of Remote Work Remote work began as flexible scheduling. Employees opted to work from home for part of the work week, keeping in touch via email and phone calls. Recent technologies make remote work easier, more common, more frequent, and more popular. A recent study found This file created specifically for Tiffany Chun Status Statistics Benefits Challeng es “Remote work is also an increasingly attractive job perk, with 57 percent of the workforce reporting the opportunity to work remotely is the benefit they look for first when applying for jobs.
that 99 percent of employees reported they would like to work off-site at least once in their career. 1234 The attitude of clients, suppliers, and vendors has also changed to be more accepting of remote work. At one time, clients in particular had a negative attitude about working with professionals outside of a company office. Today, their attitude ranges from neutral to positive, especially if clients and others use some form of remote work themselves. At K&L Insurance, remote workers have increased by 155 percent over the last 10 years, twice as fast as the regular commuting workforce. K&L currently uses a hybrid approach of remote and office-based work. 1 Study by the Modern Workforce website. 2 3 4 This file created specifically for Tiffany Chun
Remote Work Statistics How many employees work from home in the United States? How frequently do they work remotely? How many jobs allow remote work? How many people want to work from home? K&L Insurance used a consulting firm to conduct a survey to find out the answers to these questions and more. The consulting firm interviewed current and former K&L Insurance employees in all types of positions. Following are some of the most striking results: About 3.6 percent (5 million employees) of the U.S. workforce currently works from home at least half of the time. Around 60 percent of survey respondents say their job would allow them to do remote work. More than 80 percent of employees want to work remotely at least some of the time. Compare this to only 12 percent of the federal workforce that report they do not want to work from home. The consulting firm also reviewed similar surveys to compile representative demographics. They found that the typical remote worker is college-educated, about 40 years old, earns an annual salary around $60,000, and works for an organization with more than 100 employees. About 60 percent more U.S. employers offer flexible workplace options than five years ago. Only 10 percent make the option available to all employees. Larger service-oriented companies are most likely to offer remote work opportunities, especially to full-time employees. Businesses in New England and the mid-Atlantic states are most likely to provide remote work options. Benefits of Remote Work Employees and their employers enjoy benefits from remote work. Remote work has positive effects on productivity, budget, stress, and scheduling. Productivity: A recent study by Stanford University found that remote workers are about 13 percent more productive than their traditional office colleagues. Budget : Remote workers save up to $7,000 per year in commuting, clothing, food, and childcare costs. Employers save up to $12,000 annually per half-time remote worker. Stress : The flexibility of remote work helps employees balance work and life tasks and activities. Telecommuting employees report feeling less stressful, and many believe remote work improves their health. Regaining commuting time creates more leisure and family time. Scheduling : Almost half of the K&L survey respondents said one of the greatest benefits of remote work was flexible scheduling. People enjoyed selecting their most productive hours for work and designating certain days for appointments and other necessary activities outside of work. Challenges of Remote Work Remote work also poses challenges for employees and employers. Remote workers report having a difficult time separating work from home life, tending to work extra hours to meet deadlines or copy with a heavy workload. Remote work also separates employees from one another, depriving them of social interactions that build relationships and promote collaboration. Teamwork can be difficult to maintain without in-person contact. See the “Concerns” section for more challenges. Coming Trends K&L Insurance surveyed business literature and conducted focus group discussions to identify coming trends in remote work. This section summarizes the findings from those sessions. Hybrid Workspaces Most organizations are enthusiastic about combining remote work with a traditional in-office environment. Fewer are planning to make a switch to a completely remote workforce. Employers reported the following expectations for the next five years: Days per week of remote work 50% Increase in productivity 12% Reduction in office space 25% Reduction in absenteeism30% Reduction in voluntary turnover 10% Community Benefits In addition to employee and employer benefits, survey respondents identified substantial benefits to communities and the environment. Factor Savings Greenhouse gas reduction 25% Fossil fuel reduction 35% Concerns Respondents also identified ongoing issues and concerns with remote work, including difficult separating work and home activities, interruptions during meetings, and lack of training. The following table shows the percentages of people concerned with these issues. This file created specifically for Tiffany Chun
