1. Explain how good communication goes beyond just language
Good communication goes beyond language by incorporating non-verbal cues, active listening, and cultural sensitivity. Gestures, facial expressions, and body language play a role in conveying emotions and intentions. Active listening consists of understanding the words and the context of emotions behind them. Cultural sensitivity ensures that the communication is respectful and considerate
of diverse backgrounds, this helps misunderstandings. 2. Two inadequacies in medical and nursing schools with regard to health communication
1.
Limited training in patient-centered communication
a.
Medical and nursing schools focus more on technical aspects than teaching proper communication skills. 2.
Insufficient emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration
a.
Many healthcare professionals work in teams, but the education often lacks training in interdisciplinary communication. 3. 2 potential solutions
Two potential solutions for this problem are incorporating communication skills training and promoting interdisciplinary education. Incorporating communication skills training will allow the students to learn how to have appropriate patient communication skills and aid in effective teamwork. Promoting interdisciplinary education will encourage collaboration between medical and nursing students, fostering better communication skills among future healthcare teams. 4. Think back on the TedTalk presented in class on 11/8 and how there is a deep need for better communication in the health field. Now that you have identified a need in
health care, in no less than 150 words, develop a strategy for how can BBH address this need in the undergraduate program? BE SPECIFIC! If you use outside sources, CITE THEM.
There are a few ways the BBH undergraduate program can aid this issue. For example, curriculum enhancements, the program can introduce a course dedicated to health communication; this course can cover both patient interactions and interdisciplinary collaboration. At Penn State, the classes usually are larger; for this specific course, the BBH program can make the classes smaller, making it easier to include practical exercises and simulations of
how to have appropriate communication skills. The next strategy that can be used is the integration of technology. The BBH program can utilize communication technologies to enhance the students' skills in virtual environments, preparing the, for real-world applications in healthcare settings. Another way the program can benefit the future of health communication is by having guest lectures and workshops. This will provide the students with helpful insights and practical tips from experts. The BBH program can also implement an
assessment and feedback system for their program. This will evaluate the students' communication skills before sending them into the healthcare field. However, also providing a feedback survey will aid in improving the program. By incorporating these strategies into our undergraduate program, Penn State can address the identified needs in health communication and prepare students to excel in diverse and collaborative healthcare environments.
