DQ 2.2 # 3
Jacobs et al. (2016) emphasize that awareness of cultural issues is vital in groups because most groups are made up of diverse cultural backgrounds, and understanding the different cultures of the group can help understand how each member's culture affects their participation. A factor that needs to be considered is that cultures vary in individualistic and collectivistic values. Individualistic cultures may focus on personal achievement and expression, while collectivistic cultures may prioritize group harmony and shared goals (Yoon et al., 2020). Another factor is that nonverbal cues such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language can
vary across cultures. For example, some cultures rely more on nonverbal communication to convey meaning (Kinos et al., 2023). Further, a leader must be aware of some topics that may be considered taboo or culturally sensitive. Awareness of these nuances creates an environment that respects and acknowledges cultural differences, preventing unintentional discomfort or offence (Kinos et al., 2023). Lastly, cultural backgrounds can significantly influence how individuals approach conflict resolution. For instance, some cultures prefer direct confrontation, while others
value indirect or harmonious approaches (Rigg & Kivlighan, 2022). Being mindful of cultural factors and promoting an inclusive and culturally sensitive environment fosters a more supportive and effective group dynamic (Jacobs et al., 2016). Riggs and Kivlighan (2022) suggest leaders encourage open communication, actively seek feedback, and be willing to adapt strategies to accommodate diverse cultural perspectives.
Question: How should a group leader approach and navigate a culturally sensitive topic that arises within the group?
