DQ 3.1 # 2 What may be some challenges a new facilitator may come across in having termination conversations? Hi Tracy, This is a great question. A new facilitator may encounter several challenges when having termination conversations. For example, if trust has not been fully established between the facilitator and group members, discussion around termination may be met with resistance, which may evoke strong emotions (Hudgins (2013). Members may also resist acknowledging the need for termination, or this may bring up past feelings of abandonment or rejection (Hudgins, 2013). Many possible challenges arise when a group is abruptly terminated or when it is ending. Thus, it will be necessary for the new facilitator to have a clear plan in place to ensure that group members understand what is to come next to reduce any confusion or frustration. Providing members with information about the next steps or potential resources will be vital (Hudgins, 2013). Reflecting on a recent challenging conversation with a current team member at work, I realize that navigating these challenges will require interpersonal skills, empathy, and a solid understanding of group dynamics (Jacobs et al., 2016). I am confident that seeking guidance from mentors or supervisors and ongoing professional development will help me enhance my skills in managing these challenging conversations (Hudgins, 2013). As a new group facilitator, what strategies will you utilize to navigate and provide support during challenging conversations? Hudgins, L. (2013).
