CHCCOM005 - Assignment 1 What you have to do The assignment for the unit CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services has ten (10) descriptive answer questions covering all the elements of this unit of competency. Type your answers in the fields provided. Save your answers in this document then submit via the OLS. You may need to refer back to your learning resource. Question1. What do you understand by verbal and non-verbal communication? List feedback for both. Communication is a process of sendind or recieving ideas, thoughts or feelings. There are two types of communiations verbal and non verbal. Verbal communication is define as four types of communication . It includes sounds, words, language and speech. Speaking is an effective way of commuciation and helps in expressing our emotions in words. Non verbal communication plays an important role in creating a good impact. This mode of communication just co exists with verbal where it includes facial expressions, gestures,body postures and eye contact Question 2 What is effective listening and how it can be used to communicate better with people from health services background? Effective listening is a way of understaning other person's point of view. Effective listening encourages the people to reflect and collect their thoughts and explain the matter in a clear way with out any stress or rush. Effective listening plays an important role when communicate with the people from health services. when the people tries to communicate, no matter they are telling right or wrong , always be ready to listen and encourgaes them to continue their talk. wait until they finished their talk and then clarify the doubts. It is very imprortant to know the matter before giving them proper guidance. Question 3 List the main strategies to collaborate with colleagues in the workplace. The following strategies helps to collaborate with colleagues in the work place. We need to listen, clarify and agree the workplace instructions. Identify lines of communication between oraganisation and other services. Use industry terminology correctly in verbal, written and digital communicatios. Follow communication protocols that apply to interactions with different people and lines of authority. Question 4 What are the barriers to effective communication? Barriers to effective communication 1. Physical Barriers 2. Perceptional Barriers: It can be hard to work out how to imrpove your communication skills. 3. Emotional Barriers 4. cultural Barriers 5. Language Barriers 6. Gender Barriers 7. Interpersonal Barriers Question 5 Explain the strategies to address constraints to communication in the workplace. 1. Lack of clarity: Clarity of communication is esstential in the workplace. To help deliver a clear message, get to the point quickly, give the listener context and check for understand. Make sure listerner understood your message. 2. Inconsistency: Be aware of how you communicate with your individual team members in the course of a day, week or month. You have several shifts, with part time and full time employees coming and going throught the week. 3. Language Difference: We need to do their part to close the communicate gap with our employees who have limited english proficiency. 4. Not Enough listening: communication is a two way street. listen as much, than you speak. Encourage feedabck and practice active listening. Do not interrupt when others are talking, repeat key points, and ask for clarification when needed. 5. Non verbal Cues:Make sure your body language is communicating a message of attentiveness, friendliness and acceptance. Question 6 List the legal and ethical requirements and guidelines that you need to be aware of for your current work role. Legal and ethical requirements helps to create a smooth work place environments. Legal requirements such as the Government Acts, Policies and guidelines that helps to ensure that the correct practice follows at all situations. Eg: Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 and Workers Compensation Act 1987, Workplace Injury Management Act 1998 No 86 and Disability Discriminisation Act 1992 Ethical requirements helps everyone to support each other and work together. Punctuality and loyalty are the two requiremnents. The workers are directly liable for his/her own actions at the workplace. Question 7 Explain the process of resolving a workplace conflict. Provide an example of how you have witnessed or managed a conflict situation in your workplace. 1. Be Prepared: Care enough about your own well being, your relationships with co workers 2. Do not wait: The sooner you resolve conflict, the easier it is to resolve. Do not let matter boil into something bigger than it is. 3. Find a private, Neutral Place: Talking about conflict has almost no chance of succeeding if it's carried out in public. 4. Be aware of body language: Be aware of body language. You convey information without ever opening your mouth to speak. Maintain eye conatct Relax your neck and shoulder muscles Be conscious of your expressions, show your care. use a neutral tone, modarate speed and volume. 5. Share your feelings 6. Idenitfythe problem 7. Listen actively and with compassion 8. Find a solution 9. Agree on a plan of action 10. Express confidence. I have managed to solve a conflict that happened between two of my colleagues. It was a misunderstanding between them and both of them never got a chance to clear it. I organised a meeting with both of them that helpled to solve the problem. Unethical conduct is a way of doing things which are unfair of a client. It may lead to put the clients at risk Eg : two workers argue with each other in front of client about his/her culture in an intolerance way. Question 10 Your steriliser has failed with instruments that were needed for the next case. When the nurse comes to collect them and is told there will be a delay, the nurse becomes disgruntle and distressed List some communication strategies you can follow to help resolve the issue 1. Listen to the nurse while she is asking for the particular instrument. 2. Do not interrupt her while she is tlaking 3. Wait for her to finish to what she want. 4. Identify the problem 5. stay calm and explain to her what happened with the instrument. 6. Ask her to be seated. 7.Informed her how long will be needed for the instruments to be ready. 8. Ask politely for any other help. 9. Deliver the instruments as early as possible. 10. Appreciate her patience.
