Part B – Reflection
“Where am I now? Where do I want to be” (Hansen & Hansen, 2021) drove me to break down my grand visions for my dream pathways into manageable chunks, providing direction to my daily life by putting a routine into place. I am passionate about creating a sustainable, purpose-
driven business that goes beyond profit, aligning with my values and serving as a catalyst for positive change. The visual serves as a roadmap, showcasing the diverse avenues within the realm of sustainability that I can potentially explore and want the reader to feel inspired by the tangible and meaningful difference it can make.
Personal Learning: This endeavour has sparked profound self-reflection, moulding my vision of the person I aspire to be: one characterised by compassion, knowledge, honesty, and committed to “responsible leadership” (Sauder, 2020). Throughout the course, the Johari window has illuminated the deep connection between my values and my sense of self, emphasising the importance of maintaining authenticity (Daniels, M., 2023). I have learned that addressing my blind spots is achievable through effective communication, as explored in the Community Interaction section. Similarly, I have recognised that my façade has occasionally strained my relationship with myself, leading to reflective gaps and reduced resilience. To remedy this, I am going to avoid negative self-talk, engage more with peers by taking initiative, and transition traits from hidden areas to open areas. Secondly, the tangible representation of my aspirations has been instrumental in reshaping my automatic responses (Vedantam, 2019) and has served as a powerful reminder of my values. Having a roadmap outline of my goal prompts a thoughtful response aligned with my long-term objectives. This practice is not only enhancing self-control but also reinforcing the connection between my identity and intentional decision-making, fostering a positive transformation in my daily responses.
Community Interaction: During a conversation with a 3
rd
year Sauder student (Oberoi & Sood, 2023), I gained valuable insight into the nuanced realm of communication styles
within the business domain, prompting me to ponder the extracurricular experiences I aim to embrace before graduating. M. Oberoi shared their own journey, highlighting the critical role of adaptable communication in forging connections, tackling challenges, and making sound decisions. Given my enthusiasm for writing, their advice on joining the Yearbook and Prospectus teams is something I am sincerely considering. This first-hand lesson served as a compelling reminder that, in real life, soft skills stand as linchpins for success and that I need to enhance those to be a well-rounded graduate. It also amplified my overall efficacy in navigating the intricacies of a dynamic professional milieu. In a recent discussion with a Feast worker (Ha & Sood, 2023), we delved into the crucial topic of work-life balance, centring around the importance of harmonising personal and mental well-
being amid life pursuits. Kyong, drawing from his student experiences, shared regrets stemming from imbalances in priorities. Motivated by this insight, I aim to craft a plan to integrate structured study schedules and prioritise leisure activities by including dinners with friends, beach walks, and solo dates. Kyong’s wisdom has reinforced the imperative of equilibrium between academic commitments and personal enrichment, a principle I eagerly commit to as I progress forward.
Alumni Inspiration: 1.
Samantha Rayner, co-founder of Better Basics and a UBC graduate from 2010, captivates me with her dedication to sustainable personal care. I am particularly drawn to

her emphasis on creating meaningful experiences that cultivate profound connections, a philosophy that strongly resonates with my own aspirations. Samantha’s journey serves as a source of inspiration, encouraging me to intertwine my passion for sustainability with a purposeful approach to personal and professional endeavours.
2.
Rian Gauvreau, founder of Clio
and a 2008 UBC graduate, stands as a beacon of innovation in transforming the legal landscape through his ground-breaking work at Clio (Ambrogi & Lawyer, 2021), showcasing a dedication to technological advancements that I find truly inspiring. Witnessing his impact on the legal field motivated me to approach my endeavours with a similar spirit of innovation and a commitment to driving positive change through the integration of cutting-edge technologies.
3.
Neil Thomas, founder of Laid-Back Snacks and a UBC graduate from 2010, serves as a profound source of motivation for me as his brand is based on his passion. What captivated me most is Neil’s interactive and community-centric business model, which transcends transactional and fosters a sense of belonging among customers. His approach to business is not only engaging but also serves as a genuine source of inspiration, encouraging me to infuse my own ventures with authenticity and a community-building ethos.
Peer Feedback: Receiving peer feedback proved invaluable to my personal and academic growth. The constructive insights provided by my peers were particularly insightful in addressing my blind spots and fostering introspection. The advice to make my UBC experiences more specific and realistic was a pivotal takeaway. For instance, I initially expressed a desire to expand my network without a clear strategy. The feedback guided me to concrete actions, revealing specific communities, internships, clubs, and events that align with my goals. Additionally, the feedback encouraged me to broaden my educational horizons beyond university’s curriculum through platforms like Coursera and Udemy. This not only enriches my knowledge but also exposes me to diverse perspectives and experiences, pushing me outside my comfort zone. This form of feedback has played a crucial role in enhancing my self-awareness, understanding my strengths and weaknesses, and providing a roadmap for continuous improvement. It has been a reflective guide in shaping my academic and personal journey at UBC.
Looking Ahead: Engaging in the Pathways Project has served as a pivotal moment for me to strategically plan my journey at UBC, leveraging the abundant resources and opportunities available. Beyond the academic realm, my focus is on actively cultivating a robust network during my time here. This project has proven instrumental in not only identifying but also implementing effective strategies for networking through CUS events that align seamlessly with my envisioned pathways. Through this project, I have gained a clearer perspective, enabling me to define my academic, personal, and career goals with precision, thus ensuring that I remain focused on achieving my objectives. Equipped with this newfound understanding, my approach is twofold. Firstly, I plan to proactively attend networking events specific to my field of interest, resulting in meaningful interactions with industry professionals and like-minded peers. Second, I aim to actively participate in CUS and AMS clubs relevant to my career aspirations, fostering connections and gaining hands-on experience. This strategic combination empowers me not only to learn but also to create value and contribute meaningfully to the Sauder community.
