Running Head: WEEK 3 1 Topics 1 and 2 Caitlin Roeder Profesor Sandy Visser-Jones Topic 1: Process or Product: Does learning occur in response to instinct or instruction? Is it a process or product? It is a broad question but I am hoping that you can demonstrate a high level of critical thinking. Refer and relate to text material. I think learning occurs with both instinct and instruction because if we think about when babies are born, they already have the instinct to look for food, to cry. As they get older, everything that was instinct turns into instruction because as parents we are teaching them how to say words, how to eat with forks and spoons, walk, run, kick a ball, etc. Learning all starts at home with parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, etc. Learning to me would be considered a process, as we get older we learn new things about life in out of school that helps us as we get into the adult world. Berns wrote “These studies point to family involvement in learning as a more accurate predictor of school achievement than socioeconomic status” (2016, 228). Topic 2: Goals for schooling: Please review Table 6.1, page 206 "Goals for schooling in the United States." After reviewing, reflect on the following questions: - What is your perspective on our goals? Be objective but if you must include your subjective opinion then it will be fine but support your opinion with textbook materials: When I was in school, I don’t feel like schools really took education, fitness, or health very serious as they do now. I feel that the goals now are actually very accurate and are good goals to have for this generation because all of it is really important to know.
WEEK 3 2 - Are we meeting all our goals for our school? If not which one are we not meeting and why? Be specific. No, I don’t think we are, not because of the teachers but because the students are not caring about their education anymore and do not take school as seriously as they should. We have kids dropping out or just barely making it by and not going anywhere afterwards because they can't do basic math or read basic books. Our academic goals are starting to go down because kids don’t care anymore. - Are we proficient in all our goals? if not which one do we need to work on and why? Be specific. I don’t think we are proficient in our academic, vocational, or social, civic, and cultural goals. As I’ve stated, kids are caring less and less for their education so kids aren’t trying anymore which leads teachers to not try either. Vocational goals is going down because most kids do not feel the need to attend college. They believe that working a minimum wage job is more than enough to get them by. Social, Civic, and Cultural goals to my understanding is going down because more and more people are relying on social media for all sorts of communication, job applications and more. Some don’t believe in laws and behaving by such. Then, provide strategies that support and empower families through respectful, reciprocal relationships to involve all families in their children’s development and learning. I think some things families can do to help their children's development and learning would be to be more hands on with them while doing homework, while they are playing outside or playing indoors. The more interaction they have with the people they have been around since birth would be the best possible way for them to develop more and will help them in school as well.
WEEK 3 3 Topic 3: Diversity and Equity: How can the schools meet the diverse needs of individuals while also providing everyone with equal opportunities? Be specific and provide examples(s). Analyze and evaluate the factors that both positively and negatively influence the socialization of the child. If we take a look at schools from either years ago or now, we would see that schools have always kept things fair but diverse. No one is allowed to be discriminated by their gender. Berns wrote “Every public school and most colleges and universities in the United States are covered by Title IX, which prohibites discrimination in school admissions, in counseling and guidance, in competitive athletics, in student rules and regulations, and in access to programs and courses, including vocational education and physical education” (2016, p. 211). Ethnicity is socialized down to three groups: Cultural assimilation: A minority ethnic group takes on the characteristics of the majority ethnic group. Example: Berns stated “The use of English as the official language in public documents” (2016, p. 212). Melting pot: Society should socialize diverse ethnic groups to blend into a common culture. Berns stated “The U.S. Olympic team with it’s diversity of American athletes and the success of African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans in events traditionally associated with Europeans and white North Americans such as speed skating and the bobsled, is a showcase for the melting pot philosophy” (2016, p. 212). Cultural pluralism: Appreciation and understanding of the culture of various ethnic groups and coexistence in society of different languages, religions, and lifestyles. Example: Berns stated “ The concept of multicultural education- learning experiences that encourages interest in many cultures within a society rather than in the mainstream culture” (2016, p. 212). The list goes on but I think that as long as the schools stay on top of things and keep everything fair and diverse, things will stay the same.
