Every employee has different factors that influence their reactions in the workplace. These factors can influence stress, emotions and feeling withing the workplace. A few examples of workplace stressors could include:
Short time frame to complete a task
Conflict with coworker/ supervisor
Change in working hours It is also very common to have stressors outside of work that affect reactions and feelings in the workplace. It is often difficult for humans to separate their home life difficulties with their work tasks. An
example of this is if an employee is going through a divorce, they may bring the stress and hurt they are feeling to work. Some other examples of personal stressors could include:
Death of a family or friend
Pregnancy
Injury or illness All of the stressors mentioned above can affect employee’s health and safety in the workplace. It is common for employees to be focusing on another task at work when under stress. Additionally if employees are stress they may not be getting a good rest at home causing them to have periods of micro sleep during the day. Any forms of stress causes danger within a work environment. If a delivery driver is under stress at home and takes his eyes off the road, he could potentially cause a very large accident. If a manager is going through a divorce at home they may not act as normal due to their stressor. A third example could be if an employee is told to rush and complete a task they may choose to
cut corners to get the task completed faster. Petersen’s Accident-Incident Causation Model is a model of workers making a decision to cause an incident or accident. The model investigates why the employee made these decisions leading up to the accident In the case study provided 2 employees were moving 75 kg supports. Harry, suggests moving the support with an overhead beam to minimize the strain on human body. Marry suggests moving the supports by hand to get to the job completed faster, they both agree. In Petersen’s accident- incident model this leads me to believe there was a reason for them rushing to complete the job. Mary & Harry did not have a supervisor around to ensure they were completing the job safely. Additionally there was no mention of pre work plans ( JHA, permits). Many times, employees cut corners or break rules because they believe they are helping the company out. For example, Marry and Harry may have decided to lift the beams by hand to get the job completed quicker because they felt pressure from their supervisor. Works Cited
