Journal Response: Week 1
1. Explain how research evidence based instruction impacts teachers, students and your school community. Research evidence based instruction is rigorous, systematic, reliable, and is backed by scientific research. The use of evidence based instruction when it comes comes to reading and writing is crucial. Using materials that are proven by research to lead students to reading and writing allows students to be successful. The use allows teachers to have a clear course of action. In addition, teachers can get parents involved by communicating what students
are learning and encouraging parents to carry that over to when their child is
at home. When teaching reading and writing it should be taught with fidelity.
It should be sequenced and taught with intention. Part of this is by modeling and practicing. Students can work on this at home with their parents by letting their child read to them. Even if it is the same book because students learn through repetition. Letting children read and reading to our children at home helps foster the love of reading which allows the child's reading ability to flourish. When parents are investing in their children they are investing in the future generation. A great way to incorporate the community is to allow people from the community come in and read to their children. In addition when the community and parents support the schools and teachers it helps the students which helps lead to students succeeding the academic setting. 2. Summarize the overview video of SOR. To summarize the video the Science of Reading has been used since the 20th century but has been gaining attention on why and how teaching occurs. There was a report in 2000 released by the National Reading Panel that stated phonemic awareness and phonics are the foundation in which readers grow upon and it is critical that it be taught for reading success. Another study by the National Early Literature Panel examined 500 studies to
determine which reading skills needed to be taught early on in a students academic career. It was discovered that phonemic awareness and phones were the most important skills. The video talked about Scarborough's Rope. Scarborough's Rode identifies critical components of reading, word recognition, language, comprehension, phonics, and decocting were included
in the rope. The video went over what phonics was and why it was important.
Phonics helps non readers become successful readers. However, it must be taught explicitly taught systematically and in the pre determined logical sequence. It is imperative that educators follow the steps and do not skip any to help ensure each students success. The video also discussed phonemic awareness and that it should be taught with fidelity and also follow
the sequence. Teaching reading does not have to be boring it can be engaging and educators can find fun activities to do with the reading that allows students to be come engaged with the material. When teaching
reading and writing it is not only important that the teacher is dedicated, but
that their administration is dedicated as well. To do this administration can learn about the Science of Reading training, assist in using assessments and determine their value. A well developed universal screener allows educators to identify needs and intervention early. It also allows for continuous analysis
of data to ensure that children are meeting goal or need more intensive interventions. Administration can also analyze the curriculum to secure resources that align with the Science of Reading. It should be systematic, intentional, and cumulative. If possible schools should work to redesign schedules to allocate uninterrupted reading blocks and also create staggered
intervention blocks across grade levels to ensure tiered support to struggling
reading. School administration can also provide ongoing training and become
apart of the reading program to be more aware of what is being taught. Another crucial point that was discussed what parent involvement. Parents are a crucial part of a child's learning. In the textbook we were provided it mentioned that up to 80% of student learning is done outside of the classroom. families can become more involved in their schools and learn about what their child is learning and how they can facilitate that at home. Parents should talk to their kids. Talking or even singing to them from infancy can increase their reading fluency. Reading with your child at home helps support reading. Another way to increase a student's reading fluency is
when they are able to read to their parents or family members at home. The books can be their choice or the parents. It allows students to develop knowledge of the world and allows them to engage in rich literature. It may seem redundant, but allowing students to re-read books because children learn through repetition. It should be a team effort between parents, teachers, students, and the school's administration.
