A Study of Professional Dispositions and Skills Marisa Griffith EDU 390 Elementary Education Seminar 11/9/2020 Prof. Bill Bielefeld
As a future teacher, I must understand where my strengths and weaknesses are when preparing to become a teacher. One must know where I am at this stage to ensure I will adequately prepare for the future classroom. I must recognize the places I need to work on most to ensure that I succeed as a future teacher. For me, the area that I am most proficient in is communication. Working at a Career Tech school has allowed me to communicate with colleagues, students, and parents properly. Due to the nation's circumstances due to COVID-19, it was my duty to stay in contact with students and parents to keep them informed of the assigned assignments. Here, I learned the importance of appropriately communicating with the parents about the situations of their children's lessons. The area that I am least proficient in is collaboration. I know this is a struggle because I struggle with sharing ideas with others. After all, they are not good ideas or the fear of rejection. I have many ideas, but I fear I will be blank on what I want to say if asked. To become better at collaborating, I need not be afraid and learn that sometimes it is okay if any idea is rejected. I must learn from my mistakes. Participating in online professional development opportunities is the best resource for me to learn and grow. There are plenty of professional development webinar series I can watch and participate in that will help me overcome this obstacle. I can approach colleagues for help in this area as well.
Understanding my strengths and weaknesses will help me develop and work on what I need to do. It will help me better understand who I am as a future teacher. I have also been told that knowing and working on your weaknesses will help you become a better teacher. To be a successful teacher, one must communicate and collaborate with students, colleagues, and parents. Proper communication skills can help one succeed in and outside the classroom. Collaboration with others will help me learn to work with others, but it also gives me a chance to learn other skills that could help me in the classroom. Collaborating is not limited to just colleagues; it also involves the students and the parents. Collaborating will help you to learn new things and give different methods that may work in the classroom. Written Communication Strategies: A teacher’s writing ability is essential in communication. Written communication comes in many forms in this day and age. Many educators have communicated via emails, classroom apps, and classroom newsletters. Written communication speaks volumes of the capabilities of a teacher. Oral Communication Strategies: Oral communication falls between both verbal and written communication. It can come in letters, emails, phone conversations, in-person meetings, or video chat. Communication Resources: Many different methods of communication are used in the classroom. For example, many schools have adopted the Remind app to communicate with the students and the student's parents. This app helps to stay in touch and keep everyone up to date with what is happening in the classroom.

School-Based Collaborations: Collaboration within the school can help others see the traditional views of teaching while also learning to collaborate to help everyone have a successful classroom. This collaboration encourages each grade-level teacher to collaborate on ideas and lessons. It helps to develop a support system within the school. Grade Level Team: Collaborating with other teachers teaching the same grade level will help ensure that they are teaching the same content as the other. This helps to ensure that they are all on the same page simultaneously. During this time, they collaborate on lessons, support one another on ideas to help each teacher have successful lesson plans and capitalize on each other’s strengths. Child Study Team: The Child Study Team usually consists of a school psychologist, school special education director, school speech/ language pathologists, and school social workers (Special Education News, 2020).” If a student is believed to be struggling in school, the teacher can contact the CST. This team aims to learn if a student has a learning disability that needs to be addressed and help given where required. Professional Learning Community: A group of educators meets to discuss ways of improving teaching skills in the classroom and help with students' academic performances. This is what we call professional development. It is a meeting that usually happens once a month. The conference discusses ways of improving classroom lessons and teaching methods. Individual Collaborations (e.g., teacher: colleague, teacher: family, teacher: student): Collaborating with colleagues helps a teacher seek help and share ideas and methods that
have enabled them to lead a successful classroom. Collaboration with parents helps to keep the parents or guardians informed of what is happening in the school. This can also let the parents know what to do with their children at home to succeed. Collaboration with students allows the students to be heard and enables them to feel like their opinion counts. Collaboration Strategies: As a teacher, our primary goal is to see each student achieve their goals and be successful in the classroom. Collaboration is something other than something meant to be seen as a task. It is to be seen as a way of learning from one another and encouraging one another to learn new things that will help lead to success in the classroom. Things are ever-changing, and staying up with the times is essential to help our students succeed in the real world. Conflict Management Strategies: In the education field, we all will face conflict, whether it is with a colleague, a student, or a parent. We must all have a strategy for any dispute, both inside and outside the classroom. Handling conflict can be challenging even for a veteran teacher, depending on the circumstances. The best approach is to maintain a positive classroom environment for the students. Strategies, proper communication skills, and learning to collaborate are the keys to a successful classroom. We need these to work with students, parents, and colleagues correctly. It is always imperative to know how to communicate and collaborate with others.
