ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER
This speech is to inform my audience about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder by providing a brief overview of the disorder including; signs & symptoms, causes & effects, and treatment & coping options.
With the rise in mental health and substance abuse deaths continuously rising in America,
it is imperative that we as individuals empower ourselves by expanding our knowledge and becoming advocates for change. Not everyone has a support system and mental health disorders are misdiagnosed or overlooked. Ever find yourself feeling bored, restless, discontented, easily distracted, driven by a motor, overthinking and unable to focus? Have you heard of ADHD?
For most people, the symptoms above
would be expected during a crisis,
unexpected loss; such as a job, divorce,
illness, death, or other significant life
change, and once the incident is
resolved, they return to “Normal.” For children and adults living with
ADHD, these symptoms are a part of
their daily mental state. This is important to me because I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult while attending college as a nursing student. After failing 2/4 exams in my fourth of eight clinical rotations, the retention coordinator called me into her office and asked “What is going on? I know your preceptors speak highly of your knowledge and leadership skills.” I expressed, “When I get my test, I freeze up and my mind goes blank. I never learned to study or take exams. I was a solid “B” student in high school and never had to apply myself before.” Boy, did that ever catch up with me! She suggested I be tested for ADHD. I made an appointment and in fact her theory was correct. However, shortly thereafter, there was a death in my family, and I ultimately dropped out of school. Looking back at my earlier years of being prescribed medications for mild depression that never really seemed to help, it made sense. Ultimately, I would always have to discontinue the medication because the negative side effects did not outweigh the benefits. The ADHD medication, however, helped almost immediately. Let’s look at some ADHD facts.
ADHD is classified as a mental health disorder that affects attention, impulsivity, executive functioning, and activity levels.
ADHD is not gender or race specific.
It is considered a learning disability in which the person is considered as: “Neurodivergent” versus Neurotypical, meaning that people with ADHD learn and process differently than most of the population.
-Often require different learning methods, may require alterations in environments (ie, limited distractions), or additional time to complete tasks.
Diagnosed by a healthcare professional such as a Neurologist, Psychologist, or PCP with previous experience. According to pediatrician, Jason Hann-Deschaine,M.D., beginning @ age 7 (not typically younger due to inability to differentiate range of what’s considered normal behavior for children 6 years and younger) physicians will use the Vanderbilt Assessment form. (The link is as follows: as a tool for parents and teachers if there are behavior concerns. It’s usually the teacher that brings it to the parents’ attention. “We typically see that at least one parent has ADD/ADHD or if there are school aged siblings of the same parents, they also have some sort of behavioral concern. We have each parent complete their own Vanderbilt form independently. If there’s only one parent in the household, another adult the child spends most of the time with is to complete their own form. We also supply the school with three Vanderbilt Forms to go to each teacher of a different subject. Once all five forms (2 parent, 3 teacher) are sufficiently completed, the parents return to the office, and we discuss the result and proceed from there.”

Now that we have an idea of what ADHD is, next, we’ll go into some of the signs/symptoms.

Transition Sentence:
While the disorder is not curable, there are many methods to help alleviate
the symptoms.
Treatment options
Cognitive Behavior Therapy to learn conflict resolution skills.
Organization/structure-make lists, prioritize responsibilities.
Peer and family support/ support groups
Stimulant medications
Psychotherapy to heal trauma.
Exercise such as YOGA.
Mindfulness and positive affirmations
Limit caffeine, alcohol, harmful substances

Limit stressors.
CONCLUSION
ADHD is typically presented as a behavioral problem. When you physically and mentally
have difficulties staying seated for extended periods it’s just as frustrating for the ADHD person as the disruption is to an onlooker. Every negative also has a positive, the setting generally determines whether characteristics are favorable. Academically, I may struggle due to feeling constrained and limited, but the visual below is just a sample of the
positive attributes my disorder works to my benefit.

So, with what you’ve learned thus far, what type of jobs would you expect a person with ADHD might be good at?

In conclusion, we’re all human and we’re all here to learn. There is no cookie cutter/one-
way to learn. Who’s to say what is right? In my ideal world, we could all just be kind to one another and recognize that every one of us is uniquely different all with our own strengths and weaknesses.
