EMERGING LEARNING TECHNOLOGY Aliza Voit D294 October 13, 2023 Task 1 1
1.
Describe one
trend related to emerging learning technologies.
One trend related to emerging learning technologies is the use of Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality, or AR, elevates the quality of education by fostering a hands-on learning approach while also enriching content, and making the overall learning experience more memorable. “AR can be defined as a computer-generated image that overlays virtual objects (augmented components) into the real world (Akçayır & Akçayır, 2017; Dalim, et al., 2017) by using a display device in a real-world environment (Huang, et al., 2016). Such technology works interactively and in real-time (Javornik, 2016).” The use of augmented reality in education unlocks numerous distinctive learning possibilities. One example of these learning possibilities is seen in the use of AR learning via an app in a chemistry classroom. Results from the study indicated that using AR as a pedagogical tool “enhanced the visualization of concepts through elements of virtual and real images, allowed students to map physical characteristics easily, and aided them in developing mental images for further discussion. Data also showed that AR not only improved motivation in the students but more importantly triggered more student-student interaction and teacher-student interaction throughout the lesson.” (Rholeo O. Virata St. Scholastica's College et al., 2019)

2. Describe one
potential impact of the trend on teaching, training, or
learning.
Within the educational setting, augmented reality (AR) technology has the potential to elevate learning by offering students interactive and immersive experiences. This not only enhances their comprehension of intricate concepts but also empowers them to apply acquired knowledge in real-world scenarios. The integration of AR not only enhances accessibility to learning but also boosts engagement across all students.

3. Describe one
potential impact of the trend on equity or inclusion
The thoughtful design of AR/VR with a focus on equity and inclusion can play a significant role in fostering these objectives. It can function as a tool to address implicit biases, enhance access to opportunities, and establish novel avenues for communication, community building, and collaboration, overcoming geographical distances. “AR/VR devices and applications can serve as assistive technologies for people with disabilities, making physical environments more accessible by adding virtual elements.” (Dick, 2023
