How Leaders Communicate 2 Communication Effective communication is a cornerstone of being a successful leader and can greatly impact the productivity and morale of a team. Non-effective communication, on the other hand, can lead to confusion, and misunderstandings, and ultimately hinder the progress of an organization. Leaders like Mark Zuckerberg and Marissa Mayer have demonstrated both effective and non-effective communication styles throughout their careers (Tong, 2022). Each leader, like Mark Zuckerberg and Marissa Mayer, has a unique communication style that can either positively or negatively impact their effectiveness as leaders. Effective communication is characterized by clarity, transparency, and the ability to listen and understand the needs of others (Vries et al., 2009). Leaders who effectively communicate can clearly articulate their vision and goals, provide clear instructions and feedback, and actively listen to the concerns and ideas of their team members. They are able to adapt their communication style to the needs of different individuals and effectively communicate across various channels. Mark Zuckerberg has been praised for his ability to communicate his vision and goals clearly to his team at Meta, which has helped to drive the success and growth of the company. He utilizes open and transparent communication, regularly engaging with employees through Q&A sessions and town hall meetings to address any concerns or questions they may have. Additionally, Mark Zuckerberg is coherent on what he wants to achieve and effectively communicates the company's vision to the public as well. While

Some neighborhoods in Chicago have a long way to go, but the students I met today gave me hope (Gallo, 2017). Messages like this contributes to a sense of trust and alignment within the organization, and ultimately leads to increased productivity and engagement among team members. Non-effective communication, on the other hand, can have detrimental effects on an organization and its team members. It can lead to misunderstandings, lack of clarity, and ultimately hinder the overall productivity and morale of a team. Leaders who fail to communicate effectively may struggle to convey their vision and goals clearly, resulting in confusion and a lack of direction among their team members. Marissa Mayer has faced criticism for her communication style during her tenure as CEO of Yahoo. Criticism has been directed towards her for being aloof and inaccessible, which created a sense of disconnect between her and the employees. She decided to change the company's remote work environment and also mandated that all remote employees show up in person for work. While there may be some difficulties with this choice due to resistance to organizational change and disruption to employees' work-life balance (Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer and Communication Theory | Free Essay Example, 2021). The main issue was Mayer's failure to effectively communicate and justify her decisions to the employees. This lack of effective communication resulted in a decline in employee morale and trust, leading to increased turnover and a negative overall company culture.

Mark Zuckerberg's transparent and adaptive communication has contributed to the success and growth of Meta, fostering trust and alignment within the organization. Conversely, Marissa Mayer's lack of effective communication at Yahoo led to a sense of disconnect, decreased morale, and a negative company culture. These examples highlight the significant impact that communication has on the productivity and engagement of team members. As such, it is clear that effective communication is a vital skill for leaders to master in order to drive success in their organizations.
