What is one reason why middle and high school students may struggle with reading and literacy? (1-2 sentences)
Early inability to acquire the fundamentals is a major factor in middle and high school pupils' potential struggles with reading and literacy as they age. Put another way, when they were younger, they had difficulty learning to read. They never really understood the concepts that had been taught in previous years, and as a result, they grew up to find reading difficult, irritating, and unsatisfactory. Lack of exposure to beneficial literacy-learning resources would be
another factor. They may not have had access to books or other practice materials throughout the years, which has left them locked at a far lower reading level than they should be and prevents them from having the opportunity to process.
What is one evidence-based strategy that can be implemented to help middle and high school students with reading problems enhance phonics? (1-2 sentences)
For middle school and high school pupils experiencing reading difficulties, strengthening their comprehension of spoken and written language is one tactic that can be used. Ensuring that they can reliably and automatically detect written words as well as map spoken sounds to letters and letter patterns in print are the two main objectives. Treating this group specifically as
young adults is also crucial. Any methods applied to older students should be different from those applied to younger students.
Explain one way that you can use this strategy in the classroom. What activity or task can you do
that incorporates this strategy?
Activities that encourage multisensory involvement can be used in the classroom. Speaking and listening should be done simultaneously as well. I would use the practice of phoneme production and discrimination in front of a mirror as one activity in the classroom. As they took turns speaking in class, students would listen to how they produce, divide, and blend speech sounds. They would have a model to imitate as well.
