Module Six Question 1
Describe the narrative path that you plan to take. For example, do you plan to start by describing the social science issue and ultimately lead the audience to the logic as to why
they should care? Do you plan to open with your research question? Do you plan to use an overarching analogy? Do you think the narrative of your presentation will work best
as a single story or as a series of examples?
As you continue working on Project Two, you may choose to structure your presentation differently. You can always edit this response later!
I plan to start my presentation by describing my social science issue to help illustrate why this
is an issue that my audience should care about. By explaining why gender-based discrimination among faculty at colleges and universities is an issue and how the issue has evolved over the last 50 years and this will lead into my research question. I can tell the story of Dr. Louise Lamphere and her class action lawsuit against Brown University in 1975 alleging gender-based discrimination was what led to her being denied tenure and subsequently let go which was settled when the university agreed to implement Affirmative Action initiatives to raise the number of tenured female faculty members to 57 before 1987 (Lamphere, 2012). This will help my audience to connect with the issue even if they are currently benefiting from this form of discrimination and help them to understand the purpose of Affirmative Action initiatives in academia.

Module Six Question 2
In your opinion, was this TED Talk engaging? Did you want to keep listening? Why or why not? Make special note of any times you felt lost or confused while viewing the presentation or trying to follow along with any technical concepts Ornish used to explain his work.
I feel that the TED Talk was engaging and kept my interest for the most part. I got a bit lost in the weeds when he was talking about prostate cancer outcomes from changing diet, my attention wandered a bit at this part. I also didn't fully understand how just introducing a new salad option at McDonald's was going to fix the larger issue, but it definitely is a good step. I feel like if he had expanded a bit more on his solution and how it could feasibly be implemented that would have helped me better understand the end goal he was pushing for.
Module Six Question 3
After listening to the talk, do you feel personally connected to the issue? Why or why not? If you were on a committee of people determining whether to approve funding for Ornish's work, would you agree to provide him more funding? Why or why not?
I do feel personally connected to the issue, however, I do wish he had specified that he was discussing type 2 diabetes and not all diabetics in general. I would likely eventually approve his funding, on the caveat that he provided a workable solution and a clearer plan for implementing that solution. As it stands, just from this presentation I likely would have asked
for clarifications first. It is an admirable goal, with solid evidence behind his claims, I just don't fully understand what his solution would realistically look like and what the funding would be going towards based solely on this presentation.
Module Six Question 4
Now think about your own presentation. Of course, you are not finished constructing the presentation; however, consider what you have done so far. At this stage you have finished two slides, the narrative structure and elements, the description of the social science issue, and an appeal to the audience as to why they should care.
Provide yourself some honest feedback. What areas of your presentation need the most work? How do you plan to adjust your presentation so that you communicate your research effectively?
An area that needs work in my presentation is the appeal for why my audience should care. While I do establish a connection to the audience it can definitely be stronger and more clear. To do this I can rework this section to better connect with the audience by clearly outlining how this impacts them and if they are benefiting from the current gender-based discrimination then I can draw on how it impacts their loved ones and colleagues to help form
a connection with them as this is where it is currently lacking the most.
