1. Describe a negative small group decision-making experience you encountered. Me and my family were arguing about where to eat a month ago, I wanted to go to Chuy's, but they wanted to go to Torchy's. We ended up going to Torchy’s and I got food poisoning from the taco I ate. 2. Describe the group members and any factor(s) that contributed to the negative experience in as much detail as possible. The group members consisted of my brother and my dad. One of the factors that negatively impacted the sit uation was that my dad argued “since I'm paying, we're going where I want to.” 3. Identify different group roles from each of the three types task, relational, and individual that you could have played that might have improved the situation. I should have ex pressed why I really did not want to go to Torchy’s more. I have had bad experiences in the past eating there so I should have explained to my dad why I did not want to go. I also could have put more of my own voice into the equation instead of just saying I did not want to go and provide no explanation. 4. What other group roles should other members of your group have played? My dad should have been more relational and more curious and asked why I did not want to go, and my brother could have also voiced his own opinion as well regarding where he wanted to go. 5. What decision-making strategies did your group employ? We all used hand motions as well as facial expressions to show each other how we felt about the two restaurants we were deciding on. 6. What alternative decision-making strategies should your group have used to make a more effective decision? We could have asked one another why one does and does not want to go to the restaurant, then we could have taken a vote or evaluated which one makes the most sense. 7. In what other potential ways could the experience have been improved through more effective communication? I felt that our facial expressions and hand motions helped us get more of a point across, but we should have all voiced our own individual opinions and tried to see each other's point of view. 8. Thinking critically about this past experience, what do you need to keep in mind to improve your small group experiences in the future? I need to make sure I ask more questions and get a better understanding of the conversation and try and come up with a more reasonable solution, so everyone is happy!
