Speech Topic: Remote Work Policies
General Purpose Statement (to inform, persuade, or entertain): To persuade against
Audience Information:
My target audience would be anyone who is considering working from home and wants different perspectives for it. Audience Considerations: My audience can vary greatly depending on culture and profession. While working from home has recently increased in popularity, it is sought out more in people with families.
Introduction
Attention Getter: Where were you in 2020 when the world shut down because of the global pandemic? Did you ever think that the world would come to a stand still like it did? Were you part of the population
that continued working with the public, work remotely or unfortunately lose your job because of it? Statement of Credibility
: While I was part of the population that was considered essential and continued working, I know many people who worked remotely.
Relevance Statement: While working from home seems like a great idea, and it is for many families and circumstances, it’s not always the dream come true you’re expecting. Thesis Statement:
While remote working may seem ideal, it is not supported with a lot of research, therefore we must proceed with caution. Body
Write the body of your speech. Make sure to support all points and sub points with evidence, explanations, and citations and use complete sentences
. Main Point One:
Working remotely can be harmful to your health
Sub-point
: Working remotely can cause an increase in a more sedentary lifestyle, which can cause health issues like blood clots, eye strain which can cause migraines, and possibly pick up a bad habit or two. These bad habits can range from snacking more often, which leads to weight gain, to alcohol and tobacco use, which leads to health issues of their own. Sub-point
: A person’s mental health can also suffer because of remote working. While there is not much of a difference between working remotely and working in office when it comes to depression and anxiety, it is something that employers should take note of. While remote working may not be the sole reason someone is depressed or anxious, since the 2019 pandemic there has been a decline in mental health well-being, and there seems to be no major improvement. Transition
: Not only are we concerned about our physical and mental health, but we are also worried about technical support and security. Main Point Two:
Lack of security awareness
Sub-point: Fraud is on the rise and one way people access your personal information, is by sending phishing emails/texts that obtain information to get access to your computer. Home networks usually do not have a VPN established which leaves the computer vulnerable to hackers.
Sub-point: If the company is equipped to issue technology devices, they should be connected to the VPN of the company, which helps prevent hackers. But, if you are required to provide your own devices, you must then think about security and possibly pay for services to protect yourself and the company. Transition: When working remotely, it is essential to know and understand the potential security risks associated with it. Main Point Three:
Other Disadvantages
Sub-point: While working remotely seems great, it does have many disadvantages. One of those being lack of support and motivation. When going into the office each day you are greeted by colleagues
and have the option to receive external motivation. Working remotely, you do not always have the self-
motivation to keep yourself going when it comes to getting work completed. Sub-point: Distractions at home are also a disadvantage of working remotely. While in an office setting, you can avoid distractions easier than you can at home, especially if you have family at the house interrupting you. Transition: There are many advantages and disadvantages with working remotely, you need to figure out what is best for your family and self.
Conclusion
Statement of Closure: Even though working remotely seems ideal and the best thing to do, you need to think about the disadvantages to ensure you are making the right decision. Recap of Thesis/Main Points: Even though the pandemic increased popularity around working from home, it has been around for years. Working remotely, like everything else in the world, does not come without disadvantages. Historically, employers are responsible for the health and safety of their employees, which includes the purchasing of equipment to ensure they can complete their jobs. Now many employees are left to pay for these items their self, which leads to not having the correct items they need to complete the job safely.
