Media Use Reflection Madison Hirschman Assignment Directions: 1. Track how much you engage with different types of media in an average day (social media, news media, popular media, etc.) Finding your phone's screen time: Identify how often the media is covering AES topics Pay attention to the AES source of information - was it from a news source, an influencer, a friend/family member? Who provided the information? 2. Write a reflection answering the following prompts: How much were you engaging with media in an average day (in hours or minutes) and what type of media were you engaging with the most? What types of "uses" do you utilize media for? (i.e. cognitive, affective, personal integrative, social integrative, tension integrative) Do you use different channels for different uses? Why or why not? How often and what types of AES content did you see in the media during this 24-hour period? What platforms and sources were communicating about AES? In your own words, how would you describe media literacy, science literacy, and agricultural literacy? What do you think your own level of science, media, and agricultural literacy is? What do you think the relationship is between media use and science literacy, agricultural literacy, and media literacy? How do you think the general public's media use, science literacy, agricultural literacy, and media literacy impact the public's understanding of science? How similar or different do you think your literacy levels are to the general public's? How could these similarities/differences influence how we communicate about AES to the public?
Media Use Reflection Madison Hirschman Media use can be helpful but it could also be very addictive and dangerous because of all the scams out there. On Sunday, February 4th, my screen time was 3 hours and 15 minutes. I was on social for 2 hours and 54 minutes, productivity & finance for 3 minutes, and entertainment for 2 minutes. I was also on Google for 16 minutes. I also did the screen time for my computer which was the usage of 3 hours and 29 minutes. The apps I used the most were Google Chrome, Mail, and Messages. I started my morning off by watching Good Morning America where there is always Agriculture, Environment, and Science (AES). The problem is that sometimes on Good Morning America, it could be negativity toward AES which is not good for consumers or viewers. That morning, they were talking about a recipe that uses beef that was raised on a farm which I thought was very influential toward the cattle industry. On my phone during this day, I did not cover any AES because it was mostly on social media, but my computer did through a website called The Wallstreet Journal that first started in an email when I received the notification but then I opened it in Google Chrome. The Wall Street Journal is a news source but it started with a notification from having a student email subscription of the company. My sister is also always sending me Tiktoks that I also need to look at and usually they are about how we can keep advocating for the beef industry, better animal welfare, or different ideas that we can incorporate into our herd like an ultrasound machine for cows. The Tiktoks are usually from cattle jock influencer Nick Craft that is with Craft Livestock 2.0. Even though I didn’t go on instagram this Tuesday, usually an influencer catches my eye with a product they have shared on their profile like Anna Kobza. I usually use media for personal integrative and social integrative which can be good and bad. I love looking at what other people are doing on Snapchat, where people are going on Facebook, and how people are doing it on Instagram. Media plays an important part in many lives across the world. A lot of platforms and sources that AES is usually
Media Use Reflection Madison Hirschman on are news platforms because many people want to view what changes are being made to help the environment and if they are changing any laws related to agriculture. Science is always evolving so many people want to view the technology that is being created in this industry. When I watch the news, science is always the #1 component when it comes to being in the news besides sports and politics. At home, my family uses different channels for different uses because they watch the weather on 1011 News, but they watch the news and sports on NTV News. I saw AES content all the time even when I was on Snapchat because ads popped up about science. You can also subscribe to stories on Snapchat that are related to AES to make sure you are up-to-date. An example of this would be about next generate technology where there are new saws that are sharper and cut faster. The relationship between media use and science literacy, agricultural literacy, and media literacy is that you need to understand each one of these and the principles before creating content for viewers because if you don’t get your facts straight in your content, then you aren’t providing a very good perception for viewers. Literacy is described as how much you know of a subject or idea such as science, media, and environment. My level of each of these is high because I have a science-related minor in college. I have been around agriculture all my life and I have taken program the Master of Beef Advocation (MBA) training which has broadened my knowledge about the media. Having a high education is also helping my level of literacy in each of these areas. I know many people don’t have good knowledge about media literacy because they haven’t been provided that education about the media in high school and college. If it wasn’t for my beef scholars minor, I probably wouldn’t be writing this reflection now or be in the class, but luckily I am ready to learn more about this problem. Since a lot of people had to take basic science classes in high school, people do have an understanding of science, but not greatly. Science applies to our lives daily so I think media and science literacy

Media Use Reflection Madison Hirschman should be increased greatly because so many viewers and readers encounter it. Agricultural literacy is another issue in our country. I feel that we don’t have such an issue in the Midwest, but in states like Colorado, Idaho, and along the coasts, we have problems. People do not understand how much care goes into livestock and how much knowledge producers actually have about their own livestock. The public is impacted because sometimes they don’t use their own common sense when hearing information from the media. I think my literacy levels are higher than of the public because of my education and my background coming from the agricultural industry. The way to communicate about these literacies is to have someone who specializes in the area of communication to help the public understand literacy better or to have more programs to help with the teaching. I think there should be some media classes required when in high school or first education to help educate media literacy because our world is more based on the media.
