W10 SW Disciple Activity: Like a Broken Vessel Instructions Answer the following questions completely. Question 1 Did you watch or read Elder Holland's Conference talk? (Y/N) Y Question 2  What was one takeaway for you from Elder Holland's talk? What I learned from his talk is that we will all experience some kind of sadness and anxiety in life and that we should be watching for signs within ourselves and others for signs of complications of those symptoms. I learned that it is better to prevent and slow down when it is needed than to let things get worse for pride of getting help. I think it is very important that Elder Holland urges us to seek professional help as needed and that Heavenly Father expects that from us and that’s why he gave us doctors and technology so that we can benefit from that. I also think it is very important that he teaches us that it is important to be patient and keep our faith and that can improve as we seek for help. Our faith can help us to be lifted in our moments of trials and hope for better days. Question 3 Share at least one other helpful piece of information from your research about mental illness and its consequences. Cite the article(s) or website(s) you chose to focus on. Share at least 2 things you learned. One of the articles that I read which is intitled “No health without mental health” stood out to me because it raises the awareness that mental health is an issue that needs attention and education on the topic is very important. The article stated that 14% of the population face BYU-Idaho SW 260
challenges with their mental helth. The article also warns that mental health comes a lot of times with substance abuse, which makes that an even bigger issue for mental health and public health. One of the consequences of mental health is that a lot of times that comes with developmental delays and consequently can cause the impoverishment of the population. Another fact that is also considered in the article is that in developing countries mental health is less of priority which contributes to the poverty cycle. The mental ill is also more prone to accidents and health issues and consequently becoming long term disabled physically and mentally. We also see an increase of the homeless population in consequence of mental illness. That segment of the population becomes more susceptible to diseases such as diabetes, AIDS and tuberculosis. ( https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(07)61238-0/fulltext ) Another website that I went to find resources of how to address mental helth and improve that was The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), they offer a variety of learning resources for students and teachers about mental health and the brain. I think that education plays a huge role to help to lift the stigma that we have about mental health. In the one-minute videos they were able to share coping activities for teens and children that struggle with anxiety, such as keeping a journal about your feelings and unhealthy thoughts, to do mindful exercises, eating healthy, avoid caffeine, and sharing your feelings with your family. The consequences of mental health are real and I don’t think many parents are aware of that until it is already too late. We live in a world that we need to learn how to deal with our feelings and talk through them and we will have to build our mental health and avoid many of the consequences such as depression, panic attacks, and other disorders that could have being avoided with prevention. What did you learn as you shared your research with that person? Was the conversation helpful? Awkward? Revealing? Healing? I shared my research with my sister and she has challenging kids and has a hard time navigating that as her mentality is that everything is solved with discipline. I shared some of the Mental Health Minute videos as a simple way for her to help her kids and herself to deal with anxiety and defying behavior. I always share with her what I learned about mental health with my kids that are on the Autism Spectrum and how embracing their feelings and frustrations can calm their nervous system. The process of self-regulation for your child and yourself is huge in improving the family relationships. Learning how to name feelings and accepting them is a great part of the challenge that we have as families and we learned as kids to be strong and to avoid any of those feelings. I often see that it is a very uncomfortable topic, because parents feel that they are failing their children, and that can only be overcome by educating parents about the topic of mental health and that we all need to learn how to cope with that. I very much enjoy helping others in that topic as I improve myself educating others about self-regulation, and dealing with our emotions. Question 5 What are the most important things you learned in completing this assignment? I think the most important thing that I learned is that we have so much good information to help with mental health and that we should advocate to normalize the way that we treat any other symptom we have. Our mental health can improve our lives so much and prevention is key to keep a healthy mind and body. I also learned that mental helth is way more complex than we think. What we eat, what we watch, and how we deal with our feelings are essential to keep our minds and spirits in good health. Question 6 Acting as a Change Agent, how could you ethically help someone working through such difficult issues? I believe that the first step is to show empathy and show that you care. Another important aspect is to acknowledge the principle of self-determination. We can educate about the benefits of seeking for treatment, but we also have to respect people’s agency. I also think it is important to leave the message that it is possible to have a good life even if you struggle with mental health and that today we have many routes we can take to treat that. We have everything from medications, to therapies, to also a more holistic approach. The only case that we need to step up would be is if that person is having suicidal thoughts and is putting their life or others at risk, in this case we need to intervein. BYU-Idaho SW 260
