COM 110: Digital Literacy Week 2 Triple Entry Quoting Worksheet Directions: Complete the worksheet for at least two quoted passages (no more than 2-3 sentences) from the required reading and video this week. Once you are finished, you can plug your quotations (with References List entry and in-text citation) and your written responses to them into your Week 2 Discussion Board post. Submit the worksheet to the link in Week 2. What did the resource say? Quote it directly. Add a signal phrase and in-text citation in APA style (see Week 2 Learning Resources for a signal phrase handout and APA in-text citation guide). How would you list the source in the References? Use APA format (see Week 2 Learning Resources for APA References List guide). Respond to, analyze, and/or contextualize this quote. Some possibilities: Why does this quote matter to you? Why is it important in understanding the resource? What connections can you make with other resources for this unit or in the course as a whole? Sample Direct Quote: According to Castells (2001), “The Internet did not originate in the business world. It was too daring a too expensive a project, and too risky an initiative to be assumed by profit-oriented organizations. This was particularly true in the 1960s, at a time when major corporations were rather conservative in their industrial and financial strategies, and were not ready to risk funding and personnel in visionary technologies.” (p. 22) ( Note : in your writing, the passage above would be block indented, with no quotation marks, since it exceeds 40 words. See Learning Resources.) Sample APA Style Reference: Castells, M. (2001). Chapter 1: Lessons from the history of the Internet. The Internet galaxy: Reflections on the Internet, business, and society (pp. 9-35). Oxford University Press. Sample Response/Commentary: It is very interesting to me that while developments to the Internet (and regulation around it) seems to be largely driven by business today, as Castells (2001) argues, the Internet might never have come about as it did if left to businesses. According to Castells (2001), it took a combination of government, military, academics, and students, to have the vision and passion to carry out this project. It makes me wonder what aspects of the internet would be better today if decisions were made now without regard to how others might profit, and without the influence of corporations on laws and regulations.

Some possibilities: Why does this quote matter to you? Why is it important in understanding the resource? What connections can you make with other resources for this unit or in the course as a whole? According to Castells, “IPTO enjoyed considerable freedom in managing and funding this network because the Defense Department had entrusted ARPA with autonomous judgment about how to stimulate technological research in key areas without suffocating creativity and independence, a strategy that eventually paid off in terms of superiority in military technology.” Castells, M. (2002, October). Chapter 1: Lessons from the History of the Internet . ‘ The Unlikely Formula: Big Science, Military Research, and the Culture of Freedom’ (pp.9-35) This was very interesting and important to me because it explains a beginning process to a long journey ahead using technology. To have the “Defense Department” entrusted into technological research which is also known as military research by this time in history where the ideals in the way the country is military wise advanced into new ones to secure new data through “creativity and independence”. It is very important to understand that technology has provided us with major advancement through efficient research. According to Evans, C. L. (2019, March 8), “But of course, human computers helped launch the US Space Program by making trajectory calculations at NASA. They assisted studies of nuclear fission on the Manhattan Project. They crunched astronomical data at Harvard. They cracked World War II codes at Bletchley Park. The applications of their work were as manifold as any application of mathematics and technology, but they all had one thing in common, which is they were all women. Yes, of course. Why are we here if not?” Evans, C. L. (2019, March 8). Claire L. Evans lecture - “broad band: The untold story of the women who made the internet.” YouTube. This quote matters to me because it shows that women in history were a part of some of the greatest technological events here in the United States. It's very important to understand that women at this technological time were also called “human computers” as they performed mathematical calculations all by hand for example in cracking World War 2 codes. Connecting to our modern-day times we still do mathematical calculators but for minor things while bigger things have technology to solve all those problems both enhancing our mind in how we operate in those certain situations but also learning how to work with technology to gain a much
What did the resource say? Quote it directly. Add a signal phrase and in-text citation in APA style (see Week 2 Learning Resources for a signal phrase handout and APA in-text citation guide). How would you list the source in the References? Use APA format (see Week 2 Learning Resources for APA References List guide). Respond to, analyze, and/or contextualize this quote. Some possibilities: Why does this quote matter to you? Why is it important in understanding the resource? What connections can you make with other resources for this unit or in the course as a whole? quicker and more efficient answer. According to Castells (2001), “In sum, all the key technological developments that led to the Internet were built around government institutions, major universities, and research centers. The Internet did not originate in the business world. It was too daring a technology, too expensive a project, and too risky an initiative to be assumed by profit-oriented organizations.” Castells, M. (2002, October). Chapter 1: Lessons from the History of the Internet . ‘ The Unlikely Formula: Big Science, Military Research, and the Culture of Freedom’ (pp.9-35) This was very important to me as it not only goes into more depth on how using technology continued to advance research for many categories. But also, surprising that this technology wasn’t seen as something the business world should have their hands on just yet. It makes me wonder if this was a decision considered based on the economy at the time or perhaps matters such as world conflicts were first priorities?
