The concept of BICS, which is Basic Interpersonal Communication Abilities, and CALP, which is Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency revolves around the idea that to master a second language truly, you need to be good at everyday social skills, like chatting with friends and more formal academic language skills, like reading and writing about complex topics. For English Language Learners to do well in school, they need to be skilled in both these areas

. When thinking about teaching a reading comprehension lesson to ELL students, there are some helpful things a teacher can do. Instead of rushing through questions, the teacher might give students more time to think and respond. Using clear and simple language is crucial. It helps
if students can work with others who speak their native language, and the teacher should encourage them to express themselves orally without worrying too much about making mistakes.
In the classroom, teachers use many different strategies to make things easier for ELLs. They might slow down when they talk, show demonstrations to help them understand, use short phrases, or even play audiobooks. These are tools to make lessons more accessible. To improve a

Allowing different ways to show what they've learned, like making posters or presentations, can be constructive. If students don't

know a word, they should be allowed to use dictionaries or ask for help. Also, reviewing what they've studied before a test helps refresh their memory

In comparing my answers to the text's suggestions, there's a similarity in the key concepts, but the language and approach differ. Both emphasize the importance of balancing social and academic language skills, providing support in lessons, and using various strategies for teaching and assessment. The text is more formal and structured, while my response aims for simplicity and directness.
