Self-Reflection Assignment #1 1
Keeping in mind that we all have biases, how do you think that your personal biases and cultural beliefs will influence how you work with children and families? Consider at least one negative bias and what you could do to address it. Give two examples.
Working as a teacher in a collectivist culture, I’ve been trained to teach in
traditional settings where children as young as KG are sitting at desks and schools adopt a
rote learning system. Therefore, my perceptions and expectations are that I control the
learning environment and that children respond to my instructions. I recognize that I am
influenced by my expectations which are known to be one of the common tendencies in
perception (Adler et al., 2020)
.
Through my training at GBC, I am developing ‘cultural competence’
and have
become aware that children learn through play and are given the freedom to explore in
their own way using their own tools. As an ECE, I now appreciate the unique potential that
children have and the importance of providing them “with meaningful opportunities to
engage in and contribute to the learning environment.” (College of Early Childhood
Educators, 2020, p.4
)
As I start my field work, I will practice self-reflection and frequently monitor my
thoughts and interaction with children, engage with parent to listen to their expectations,
and while doing that, I will constantly remind myself that those children and families come
from diverse backgrounds. With that, I am keeping an open mind, building empathy, and

ultimately re-creating reality from the perspective of the other rather than mine (Week 5
ppt., p.22). 2
How do you think your own experiences, values, and beliefs will influence how you communicate with others? Give two examples.
Being raised in a collectivist society, societal norms are built around respectfulness,
social harmony and prioritizing the group over the individual. I therefore have a ‘built-in system’
that readily helps me seek common grounds when communicating with people of diverse
cultures and perspectives. For example, during my previous teaching experience, I was able to
build excellent professional relationships with my colleagues who came from different
countries and had diverse cultural backgrounds. As an ECE, this experience will strengthen my
understanding that “people come from and have multiple social identities and different values
and ways of knowing and being in the world” (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2013, as cited in
College of Early Childhood Educators, 2020, p.4).
My cultural beliefs also support the concept of ‘cultural humility’ (College of Early
Childhood Educators, 2020) which gives value to other people’s perspectives and their ways of
being and knowing. This translates into positive and inclusive communications that helps build
trust, respect, and a safe learning environment (College of Early Childhood Educators, 2020). 3
What do you think you can do as an ECE student to promote a positive identity in young
children? Give two examples.

To promote a positive identity in young children, it is important that I create inclusive
social and physical environments by recognizing and understanding the uniqueness of both
visible and invisible aspects of cultural diversity and giving children meaningful opportunities to
be active participants in the learning process (College of Early Childhood Educators, 2020).
As an ECE it is also important to acknowledge that cultural contexts for children and
their families can change over time (College of Early Childhood Educators, 2020) and
accordingly, take responsibility in becoming a continuous learner that can accommodate such
changes.

What can you do to promote a positive identity when communicating with other adults? Give two examples.
As an ECE it is important that I constantly reflect on the physiological, psychological,
social and cultural factors that influence how I select, organize, organize, interpret and
negotiate information (
Week 5 ppt., p.9) while communicating with colleagues and families.
This is extremely important to build collaborative relationships and create a culture of respect
and integrity where people of diverse cultures can feel valued. Engaging with families and learning about their cultures and interests, understanding their situations and challenges, and being aware of ECE regulations and evidence-informed research can facilitate ongoing learning and give me the ability to promote a positive identity to
members of the community (College of Early Childhood Educators, 2020).
