COM 270 Presentation

Communicating In Online and Physical Learning
Specific Purpose Statement:
This presentation will inform my audience about which learning is more effective in communication: online learning or physical classroom learning?
EX: Many of us were able to experience both styles of learning before and when COVID and social distancing happened.
I. Introduction
A. Many students had to undergo changes from physical classroom learning to online learning when COVID hit. How did it affect communication?
1. I will discuss the pros and cons of communication in physical learning.
2. I will discuss the pros and cons of communication in online learning.
3. I will discuss both online and physical learning communication and which one is more effective.
Transition: Is there better communication when a student is learning in the classroom or from their home?
B. When COVID began, it wasn’t a choice for the students to transfer from physical to online, so it created a lot of problems with their communication and learning.
1. Physical learning can be beneficial because they are engaging with other students who can also help them.

2. Online learning can also be beneficial by helping the students go at their
own pace and having teachers to communicate with them one-on-one through emails.
3. Both aspects offer pros and cons, but I believe it is better for communication to be held in the classroom.
Transition: Now I will tell you about communication in physical learning.
II. Communication is a crucial aspect of the classroom environment; however, it has
its pros and cons that can impact the learning experience of students.
1.
One advantage of communication in the classroom is that it encourages active participation and collaboration among students, which promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
2.
Poor communication skills from the teacher or students can lead to misunderstandings and confusion, which messes with the learning process.
3.
Students can physically go up to the teacher and get an answer right away.
Transition: Next, I will discuss the communication within online learning.
III. Online learning offers increased flexibility and accessibility, but it also presents several challenges, including potential technical issues and lack of face-to-face interaction.
A. Supporting evidence for your information (weakest)
1. “
The results showed significantly higher discussion participation patterns for the Internet-based course (both by class section and by gender) and no
significant differences in learning in either class section” (Arbaugh, 2000).
2. It is very flexible for the students to complete their work on time and have more room to work one-on-one with their online mentors.
3. There can be issues with the internet in homes that can cause absences and failed grades because a student was unable to access their course for the day.
Transition: Now, I will discuss how both online and physical learning has effective communication, but it can be different for every student.
IV. While both online and physical learning offer effective communication methods, the effectiveness of each mode of learning largely depends on the specific needs and

preferences of the learner. Although studies show that physical learning is more effective due to one being able to pick up on their peers’ nonverbal cues.
A. Supporting evidence for your information 1. There are some students who find it difficult to be in a face-to-face learning environment because of other factors such as bullying, anxiety, etc. In this case, they prefer to be online or homeschooled because it is easier for them to
communicate their learning needs.
2. On the other hand, some students need face-to-face learning because that is the only way that they believe truly helps them understand. They find it beneficial to be able to communicate to the teacher and their peers about their learning.
3. “Face-to-face communication is often more effective than written or audio-only conversations. This is because seeing one another allows us to pick up on nonverbal cues and body language” (Wooll, 2022).
Transition: To close out my presentation, I would like to believe with supporting evidence that physical learning provides a more effective communication.
V. Conclusion
A. In person and online learning both have very strong beneficial factors in communication for the students. There are students who may find one to be more beneficial than the other, but overall, it gives students a chance to understand communication from both aspects. Effective communication in a classroom should include verbal and nonverbal cues between the teacher and their students. It is easier for students to be able to communicate more effectively in a physical classroom because they
are able to see their peers face-to-face and understand their words by connecting it with their body language and facial expressions.
