Self- Assessment of Interpersonal Communication Competencies
Setting goals is so important it can help you have something to hold on to or aspire to it gets you out of depression and allows you to create a vision for your life. And celebrating those small victories on the way will keep you positive and hopeful. But I know from firsthand if you set the bar too high for yourself and your goals seem to far out of reach or unattainable by your circumstance or things out of your control it can have a negative impact on your interpersonal improvement (Health Director, 2020).
I was challenged to choose two goals aspire to one professional and one academic my goal statements for both are as follows. “I will improve my communication skills in four months when it comes to advocating for my health”. And “I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree by finishing my courses by Christmas of 2023”. I chose these goals because they were once long-
term goals out of reach in the distance for a long time. However, the circumstances I am in have humbled me and showed just how much of a fighter I really am. I persevere through the hard times, and I fight to come up on top and achieve all my goals and dreams (South University online, 2023).
The first “I will improve my communication skills in four months when it comes to advocating for my health”. I am not far from attaining this goal because of the skills, knowledge, and tools that I have been given to be an effective communicator in my college courses. Because of this course and many others, I am closer to achieving effective communication with my doctors, peers, family, and significant others in four months when I have finished school and gathered the information needed from the woman’s retreat. This goal is very possible and not set

too high because the knowledge to be my own advocate is everywhere (Health Director, 2020). But with further thought I realize that it might be set too low because of the time frame I think it is possible to be a better communicator and advocate before four months.
I’m going to rewrite my statement. “I will be an effective communicator and advocate for my health by November 15”. That means this goal will only take a month to achieve and the knowledge and tools starts as soon as today. I will benefit not just mentally, but physically and emotionally from attaining this goal because being able to communicate what I need and don’t need when it comes to my health has always been an issue and now the issues like taking over forty pills a day can be fixed with the right type of communication. The strengths I posses is the ability to empathize and problem-solve and very good at collaborating and researching to find another way (Floyd, 2020).
The next goal has seemed so out of reach for a while because a lot of things have been working against me when it comes to achieving this goal and the finish line continues to be further and further away. But now I’m staring the finish line in the face and that shows me that it is attainable. “I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree by finishing my courses by Christmas of
2023”. This one is tricky as far I am to attain this goal because I have a lot of health issues that keep me in and out of the hospital and treatments to help with my lifelong disorders and diseases.
As I am two classes out from graduating, I still must consider that school must take the back burner sometimes for me to heal. Setting smaller goals for this would be to take it one course at a time instead of multiples in one session to not only finish but to excel. I will benefit in every possible way if this goal is attained. It will take the stress of school off my back and one less thing to worry about (Martin, 2021). But also, it will make me so proud of myself to have this success under my belt that no

one could take away. The strengths that I possess already are determination, perseverance, and communicating with my grad team and advisors. I want to improve on not stressing myself so much on things that are out of my control and better communicating my health situation in the beginning instead of making it a priority towards the end of the course. The areas of online learning that will help improve my academics is live lectures with professors and more diverse assignments than just essays. Having more projects, and tests help us to respond better with what we learn because online learning is hard as it is and people have different learning styles and disabilities. Me I am both dyslexic and an auditory and hands-on learner, so it takes a little longer and it poses as a challenge for me with certain courses that are not in person. The area of interpersonal communication that will improve my career perspective is how to handle conflicts in a professional setting not just stonewalling or avoiding by effectively problem-solving (South University online, 2023).
