1E Project Goal For my project goal, I have selected “I do not know how to set boundaries with friends.”
Part 1: Identifying Patterns
Strategic Step 1 - Tone
Communicating with the appropriate tone is crucial when discussing boundaries with friends. A respectful and assertive tone helps convey your message without appearing confrontational or aggressive. McLean (2018) emphasizes the significance of using "I" statements to express feelings and needs without placing blame. For instance, stating, "I feel uncomfortable when..." rather than "You always make me feel..." helps maintain a positive and open communication atmosphere.
Strategic Step 2 - Timing
The timing of discussing boundaries plays a vital role in effective communication. McLean (2018) suggests choosing a time when I and my friend can engage in a focused conversation without distractions. Avoid addressing sensitive issues during stressful or busy periods. Opt for a moment when you both can dedicate time to listen and understand each other's perspectives, enhancing the chances of a constructive dialogue.
Strategic Step 3 – Understanding the Environment
McLean (2018) underscores the importance of considering the environment in which communication occurs—selecting a setting that is private, comfortable, and free from potential interruptions fosters open communication. Additionally, being mindful of your friend's emotional state and choosing an environment where they feel at ease contributes to a more receptive conversation about boundaries.

Declaration 1:
In order to achieve my goal of setting boundaries with my friends by using an assertive and respectful tone, I will employ "I" statements to express my feelings and needs. This approach allows me to articulate my perspective clearly without sounding accusatory, fostering open communication. Practicing active listening during these conversations
will be beneficial, demonstrating my commitment to understanding their viewpoint and creating an environment conducive to healthy dialogue. However, allowing emotions to escalate and steering towards a confrontational tone may hinder effective communication, potentially derailing the purpose of setting boundaries.
Declaration 2:
In order to achieve my goal of setting boundaries with my friends, I will strategically choose appropriate moments for discussions, ensuring that both parties can dedicate time and attention to the dialogue. Scheduling conversations during periods of low stress and minimal distractions will contribute to more focused and meaningful interactions. On the contrary, bringing up sensitive topics during hectic or distracted moments could hinder communication effectiveness, leading to misunderstandings or a lack of genuine engagement.
Declaration 3:
In order to achieve my goal of setting boundaries with my friends, I will make a conscious effort to select private and comfortable settings for these conversations, taking into consideration my friend's emotional state. This careful consideration aims to create a conducive environment for open communication, free from potential interruptions or external disturbances. However, engaging in discussions in noisy or crowded places may hinder the effectiveness of the conversation, as it may lead to misunderstandings or difficulty in maintaining focus on the subject at hand.

Part 2: Plan and Practice
2A. Surroundings
In order to achieve my goal of setting boundaries with my friends, I will choose environments that foster honest and open communication. Specifically, envisioning a Starbucks coffee shop where we can enjoy our favorite caramel frappe and apple crisp macchiato will create a relaxed and familiar atmosphere. The comforting ambiance of a coffee shop, with its casual setting and the enjoyment of our preferred beverages, will likely positively impact the conversation. It provides a neutral ground, making exchanging thoughts and feelings more comfortable. However, I'll be mindful that the noise level and potential distractions in a public place could pose challenges. To counter this, I'll strategically choose quieter times or corners to ensure our conversation remains focused and productive.
2B. People
In order to achieve my goal of setting boundaries with my friends, the participants in this communication event will include my friend and me. The elements of the conversation will involve expressing my love for my friend and my deep commitment to our relationship while also clearly addressing aspects of their behavior that I find inconvenient and inconsiderate. Anticipating their response, they might initially feel offended, but I hope they will understand the
sincerity of my intentions and the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship. The conversation could go well if they acknowledge and commit to positive changes. However, the potential derailment of success lies in my nervousness, which might lead to avoiding the meeting
altogether. To counter this, I will focus on the importance of the discussion and the positive

outcomes it could yield for our friendship. (Paragraphs describing the people and answering the questions)
2C. Reflection
Covert rehearsals were crucial in preparing me to implement my communication plan. These mental rehearsals allowed me to visualize and simulate the upcoming conversation with my friend in a Starbucks coffee shop. Imagining the specific surroundings, such as the aroma of our favorite caramel frappe and apple crisp macchiato, helped create a sense of familiarity, making the scenario more tangible. Through these mental exercises, I could anticipate potential challenges and practice maintaining a calm and assertive demeanor. Rehearsing the elements of the conversation, including expressing my feelings and setting clear boundaries, allowed me to refine my language and approach. This process boosted my confidence and provided an opportunity to strategize responses to potential reactions from my friend. Ultimately, covert rehearsals were a valuable tool to enhance my preparedness, ensuring I entered the conversation with a clear and focused mindset.
